Somchai: P. Thai will win at next polls

Puea Thai Party would win the forthcoming general elections and become a government again, former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat said on Saturday.

He was making the remark while chairing the opening ceremony of the main opposition party’s coordinating center in Pitsanulok’s Prompiram district.

Mr Somchai said after returning to power, Puea Thai party will pay most attention to settle the poverty problem of Thai people.

He said many countries welcomed and wanted ousted from prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to help them by taking a job as an economic advisor. He did not understand why the appointment of Thaksin as an economic advisor by the Cambodian government created problem between Thailand and Cambodia.

The ex-premier was confident that Thaksin will never love Cambodia more than his own motherland.

“Thaksin wants to help Cambodia as it will also help Thailand at the same time”, Mr Somchai, who is also a brother-in-law of Thaksin, said.

Mrs Yaowapa, Mr Somchai’s wife, said if Puea Thai Party wins at the upcoming polls and becomes a government, her elder brother will definitely be able to return home.

    Dean In C.M - I find it amusing too.

    The other thing I find amusing is people stating that Thaksin's administration was not good for the country. His administration was not good for the Elite or the military.

    When Thaksin took over in 2001 the country had an inherited deficit of 137 billion Baht, by 2005 we had a surplus of 5 billion baht. After the Coup of 06 we immediately went into a deficit of 200 billion baht again mostly with increased military budget spending. Today we are running a deficit of 167 billion with the projection for 2010 even higher.

    While Thaksin did benefit from some good years financially, Thailand had never been and has not been better off financially than when he was at the helm. One has to ask oneself if the coup did not happen and Thailand had of gone into this latest financial crisis with a big budgetary surplus would we be in the financial crunch that we are in now and there is only one answer. We would be in much better shape.

    May be Puea party would win the next election. But, I won't trust Mr. Somchai's comment that "Puea Thai party will pay most attention to settle the poverty problem of Thai people.". When Mr. Somchai were the Prime Minister, what did he do to settle the povery problem of Thai people ? If he didn't do anything at all, was it because he was too busy in dealing with the Thaksin court cases ?

    Mr. Somchai also said " Thaksin wants to help Cambodia as it will also help Thailand at the same time”. I really want him to eleborate further how can it also help Thailand at the same time when Thaksin is helping Cambodia. Is he suggesting that Thaksin can help Hun Sen to build up his wealth like what he did before in Thailand while at the same time advising Hun Sen to give a lot of money to Thailand too ?

    It's even more ridiculous when Thaksin's sister said "if Puea Thai Party wins at the upcoming polls and becomes a government, her elder brother will definitely be able to return home". It shows once again that Thaksin's family always believe that with power they can do everything they like. How can the new government explain to the general public that a convicted criminal is no longer required to serve his imprisonment sentence simply because the new Prime Minister is Thaksin's brother/sister or family member or supporter ?

    To: Eleanor

    Please check your dictionary before you write something that others can read and understand even though you like Thaksin too much.

    To: Chheangly

    You said "Is there anything wrong that Thaksin's family becomes very rich? You work hard, you become rich".

    Of course there is something wrong that Thaksin's family becomes very rich because he cheated Thais and gained so much profit. You work hard and you become rich is no problem. But "Thaksin" works hard in cheating Thais and then become rich. That's the problem.

    To: Kireb

    I support your comment.

    I don't wear yellow shirt or red shirt to support anyone except the King of Thailand. But, I just can't accept the ridiculous article. If the yellow shirt supporter wrote something ridiculous, I would also speak out.

    @ Chheangly

    Money doesn't grow on trees, so when Thaksin takes advantage of the (manipulated)laws, he is actually stealing your and my money! Corruption is wrong and criminal. The Thaksin clan has enriched itself over the heads of the people of Thailand and will have to serve prison time! Thats the rule of law! And whether other politicians are corrupt or not, that's a completely different discussion! I sincerely hope that's the 76 billion frozen bahts will be confiscated and used for something positive!

    TONY: I answered your question to me in the other article. Read it if you like.

    I am doubtful if Taksin would simply be able to return to Thailand if the P. Thai party wins the next elections.

    I doubt there will ever be elections again. The military/PAD and the powerful/wealthy who are convinced Thailand belongs to them will never allow new elections unless they are rigged from the start. The last elections were:

    arranged by the military;

    set up by the military;

    run by the military, and;

    overseen by the military.

    The military even posted soldiers at the voting booths, presumably to "help voters understand how to vote".

    And still "their" parties lost.

    Everyone knows full well if elections are held again, the same will happen. As Tony so aptly says, everything will be back to square 1.

    And that is why I keep saying only when the military have been re-defined and ruled out of political life forever will democracy ever work.

    Any government will always be under the yoke of the military, eternally fearing the military intervention when they try to change things in ways with which the military (and those for whom they do the bidding) disagree with.

    Thailand has string roots in its feudal past and somehow people seem still to believe the poor are supposed to be poor in some bizarre, karmic way. Or they are so due to laziness and stupidity. Meanwhile lack of jobs and a dearth of opportunities for education keep the poor from furthering their lives.

    The well off though in turn feel they somehow merit everything they have and do not give a hoot about extending a hand to the poor and distributing the national wealth more fairly.

    Should they win, they are going to be working once again for Thaksin, PAD is going to come out, the unions are going to close the country down, and we will be back to square one.

    The only solution is to take this gang of traitors and crooks, throw them into jail, and since the "rural poor" are so in tune with democracy, they should have no problem finding a new party to support in the next election.

    Is there anything wrong that Thaksin's family becomes very rich? You work hard, you become rich. Taking advantage of the law is wrong, but who doesn't do it. Thailand will perish even faster in the hands of those upper-class people who are so corrupt. The rich people are so jealous with
    Thaksin that they would do anything to topple Thaksin, now that they succeed, it's their turn to corrupt.

    Me!

    Are you ever outside the bar? Let me tell you some facts about the reality now and under the Thaksin era. Where I stay, Samui, is more corrupted now than ever. Its again possible to just BUY a Visa. Dont have to leave the country. You just pay the guy at the immigration. The difference from the before Thaksin era, its much more expensive now.
    When it comes to the nightlife, bars paying the police can operate throw the night,you can again light a joint in the bars and the local political parties are paying 2000 bath for each vote. It was a very big difference during Thaksin days. The taxi business is in the hands of a group and we have the most expensive rates in the whole Thailand. I was asked 300 bath for a ONE kilometer drive. And they all have the sign TAXIMETER. So I recommend you to take a step outside the bar and leave whatever you are drinking behind you and try to look at the surrounding with sober eyes for a change!

    What I find amusing is that the coupe makers said they had to get rid of Thaksin because of all the corruption. Yet, according to the latest results by Transparency International, which rates government corruption world wide, Thailand's government is now MORE corrupt than it was during Thaksin's time.

    This articale is a right direction for upcoming Thais futture. Most Thais people are welcome Thaksin to be back to restore The country. The only problem is, one tiny group who believs and so blind not to see how great Mr. Thaksin was, but only speaking out about his darkside. People need to be fair by looking at both ways "the darkside and the brightside" before judging others. By do so the world will be the better place to live.
