Insurgents kill, burn workers

Suspected insurgents shot dead three telephone line installers and burnt their bodies in the southern province of Pattani on Thursday, police said.
A fourth worker was slightly injured during the ride-by shooting on the Yala-Pattani highway at Ton Phai village of tambon Moh Wawi in Pattani’s Yarang district, said Pol Lt-Col Tuanday Chutanant of Yarang police station.
The four employees of TT&T company’s Yala office were riding a pickup truck heading to Pattani when four men on two motorcycles sprayed bullets at them.
The pickup truck stopped and the gunmen again fired at the workers. Three of the four victims died on the spot.
The attackers then set fire to the bodies lying inside the vehicle before fleeing.
One of the victims, Sitthikorn Chaiman, 20, managed to get off the burning truck and fired his pistol at the fleeing attackers. He was later taken to a nearby hospital.
The attack took place in front of villagers.
The dead victims were identified as Jua Suwanwong, 35, Somchoke Suwanchatri, 23, and Ekkarak Phoonphan, 15.
Police believed it was the work of separatist militants.
A broom vendor was also shot dead in Pattani on Thursday.
Wern Aoonchai, 61, was slain in Yarang district by two gunmen on a motorcycle, Yarang police said.
The victim was attacked on an intra-village road in tambon Pitumudee of Yarang district. He was shot several times in his body and died at the scene.
