Puea Thai wins by a landslide

Bhumjaithai receives a lesson in humility

The Puea Thai Party has ridden to a major victory in the Sakon Nakhon by-election on the back of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The rival Bhumjaithai Party was humbled before the popularity of the former prime minister in the northeastern province yesterday.

Just 90 minutes after counting began at 4pm, with Puea Thai candidate Anurak Boonson ahead with a healthy lead over rival Pitak Chansri, Bhumjaithai Party leader Chavarat Charnvirakul called a press conference to concede defeat.

The unofficial results released last night after all votes were counted showed Mrs Anurak sweeping all five districts in Constituency 3, winning 103,277 votes to 47,300 votes for Mr Pitak.

"I accept that Thaksin's phone-in addresses to those kamnans, village heads and community leaders played a crucial role in helping Puea Thai win today's election," Mr Chavarat was quoted by Thai News Agency as saying well before all votes were counted.

Thaksin addressed supporters in Sakon Nakhon's Ban Muang, Charoen Sin, Kham Ta Kla, Sawang Daen Din and Song Dao districts by telephone during the campaign.

"Thaksin fever is what we cannot do anything about," Bhumjaithai spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said. "They've tried to convince the voters Thaksin is the real leader of Puea Thai."

TNA said Bhumjaithai had lodged a complaint against Thaksin's involvement in Puea Thai's campaign.

A defiant Bhumjaithai deputy leader Boonjong Wongtrairat was quoted as saying the results of this by-election did not guarantee victories for Puea Thai over Bhumjaithai.

"This election is neither a benchmark for the result of every election to come in Isan [Northeast provinces] or a gauge of any party's popularity in this region," Mr Boonjong said.

"This is just the beginning and we have to work harder [to win]."

Chalerm Yubamrung, a key Puea Thai figure, was quick to claim yesterday's victory over Bhumjaithai.

He announced his party had won just 30 minutes after the counting had begun. But he conceded the by-election was a tougher fight than in past elections.

Mr Chalerm, who led the Puea Thai campaign in the by-election, said his party had won because northeasterners still love Thaksin and his efforts to resolve poverty in the region when he was prime minister. The Bangkok MP expected Puea Thai to win any poll it contests pushing the Thaksin issue.

"Yes, of course ... I've always said the people still love Thaksin. This is a victory of the people and it will show the world that the people still love Thaksin," he said when asked about the implications of the outcome yesterday.

Puea Thai will come up against the Chart Thai Pattana Party next, in a Si Sa Ket by-election being held this coming weekend.

Mrs Anurak said Thaksin had called to congratulate her since before the vote count began.

Election Commission chairman Apichart Sukhagganond said the Sakon Nakhon by-election was satisfactory.

He said the estimated turnout was between 60% and 70% and his office had received only seven complaints.

Most of the complaints concerned the illegal transportation of voters to the polling booths in the advance vote last weekend and the EC expects to conclude its investigations within a month.

The EC should be able to endorse the Sakon Nakhon by-election within a week.

Meanwhile, about 11,100 voters turned out yesterday in Si Sa Ket to cast their vote in the advance vote before the by-election in Constituency 1 this coming Sunday.

Leaflets containing messages attacking Bhumjaithai's de facto leader, Newin Chidchob, as betraying Thaksin were reported to have been disseminated in areas of the constituency.

A similar tactic was used in Sakon Nakhon before the lead-up to that by-election.

Go ahead and bad mouth Thaskin but look at the opposition. Thaksin wasn't sleeping in Sakon Nahkon it was Newin doing the snoring, the same man who was banned from politics for five years and sold out Thaksin to create this limbo, do nothing government. This is the man you see arm and arm with our PM all the time, the man behind the 4,000 buses and 46,000 tons of longan. Look at where the government is now.
Maybe Thaksin was in during an up cycle of prosperity but the cycle was still up for the 18 months before an election when the SET dropped from 700 to 400 and the country was paralyzed with incompetence. If I must face a down turn I would rather face it from a position of strength then in a weakened condition.

I believe that Thaksin is not the key to the success of this byelection .
In 2006 the PAD caused disruption in Bangkok for a lengthy period , finally triggering an illegal millitary coup ,ousting Thaksin the Prime Minister and his TRT government .
People of the north, northeast and other areas who had voted democratically for the Thaksin government , still feel deeply aggrieved , that a grave injustice has been done .
Politicians the world over are Not"Whiter that White" or"Squeaky Clean",it is no good Thailand thinking the will find one . If Abhisit might be considered straight and honest, he still has to move with the forces around him who are not .
Whatever people may think of Thaksin personally ; I do not believe that in Thailand you will find another man who can govern the country so successfully as Thaksin did , lifting it from a former recession and giving Thailand a good and high profile abroad ; which brought much needed foreign investment and tourism .

The Kamnan have just got their 'pay increased' from the illegal government. If the Kamnan decided to believe and support Thaksin to the extend of influencing their tribes, then be graceful to accept the reality.

The authorities should first investigate the accusers instead of the Kamnan. The Kamnan cannot be intimidated. Don't think that they are stupid either.

Fox of discussion # 14: FOX you are absolutely right.....

Taksin won an election and however slow, democracy had taken:

    a step forward.

Then the military intervened and overthrew that democratically elected government.

    Two steps back.

And people suggesting Thai democracy os vote buying forget one essential
of ALL democracy, Everybody votes according to what, primarily, they will gain. Thus all democracy IS about who can promise enough to the most people.

    Promises are vote buying...

And again, when Abhisit promises to award high governmental posts to politicians from the opposition of they support his government, and then gains power as a consequence.

    THAT too is vote buying...

I wrote before that if the Bhumjaithai won I would eat my hat.

Well, looks like I will not have to do that.

And this is a good example of why the current government is stalling as long as they can for new elections.

"You can fool some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time but,you cannot fool all of the people all the time..."

    Holds true here, too...

And what do you expect? Sure Taksin was not a saint, but what politician in Thailand is? What cop? What general? What.....never mind.

And he did, whatever you say, alleviate however slightly, the poverty in the North and North East. The Bangkokians and their PAD puppets do not give a damn about the poor, and even say the poor should not have their votes counted because they are too uneducated.

    - Taksin wins an election (again) some years ago

    - September 2006 the military overthrows a legally elected government and sets up a puppet government.

    - THAT government sets up election. But first they tried to rig the game by sidelining politicians from the (now)opposition.

    - AGAIN the same political parties, albeit with different names and representatives win the elections.

    - The military backed PAD take to streets. Occupy government areas, airports, kidnap policemen, use weapons (seen brandishing pistols in front of posters of the king)

    - The military states it is for the people to decided, that they will not intervene.

    - One OM is forced to resign for cooking on TV!

    - The next government too is stifled by the ILLEGAL PAD acts.

    - The government is forced down by a ridiculous "court" decision.

    - The new government is set up.

-Abhisit awards governmental posts to people who will betray their voters and join their ranks.

    - THAT is VOTE BUYING at the highest level.

    - The UDD protest.

    - Some BLACK shirts show up on the streets of Pukhet and mysteriously violence breaks out as a REACTION.

    - A few thugs provoke violence in Bangkok. But nothing on the scale of the PAD who got away with murder. Literally.

    - The military now steps in and breaks the back of the UDD.

    - The UDD are broken. PAD supporters sneer at them for backing down so easily.

    - At least their leaders, calling off the demonstrations, respected people's safety more than the PAD leaders did!

    - Everything is back to normal. The poor have lost their power to dare to dream, the wealthy are wining and dining, the military are in control, newspapers dare not write anything other than what is expected of them.

And you wonder why people still vote for parties supporting TAKSIN THE FUGITIVE FORMER PRIME MINISTER ON THE RUN" ???

As much as i dislike Taksin myself for many things, and believe he truly is a skurk, yet everything considered, I think he deserves far more to be PM than anyone else. he may be selfish, megalomaniac and yes, I do not know but possibly guilty of crimes. But...nobody else before him gave ANYTHING to the poor other than charity. And they have as much right to the riches of this country and a fair deal as any other Thai.

You forget the poor, and in time you will no longer be able to protect the rich.

Unless, that is, you follow along the same path Burma, or Iran or other countries that have built facades and claim legitimacy.

No wonder - A good question you ask.

It would likely have to be more than the doubled salary that the Democrats gave them during a quickly down turning economy when they first took office.

Something people should consider, especially ones that don't like the PTP or Thaksin. The majority of the rural people still support both not because he/they bought them but because the TRT and Thaksin delivered what was promised and gave them the dignity they deserve, things the Democrats never did.

Corruption will always be in this country from the lowest rank of police, custom, immigration, government official to the very top post. So it is better to have someone that whose can eat and at the same can work and perform. No point having someone that can talk and eat but can’t doing any good for the people and country.

How sad, I see Newin's face everywhere. No complaints there when he is still involved in politics. Double standards again?
