Suthep stands by promotion of Somkid

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban says he will write to the Saudi government to explain the promotion of Somkid Boonthanom to assistant national police chief.

Pol Lt Gen Somkid was one of 11 senior police officers promoted last week. He was indicted along with four other active and former police officers by the Office of the Attorney-General on Jan12 in connection with the disappearance in 1990 of Saudi businessman Mohammad al-Ruwaili.

Mr Suthep said yesterday he would write to the Saudi charge d'affaires to clarify Pol Lt Gen Somkid's appointment so he could relay the explanation to his government in Riyadh.

    Looks like Thailand is taking its confrontation to international level. There is the conflict with Cambodia regarding Prah Vihear. There is conflict with US and Russia on the extradition case of Mr. Bout. Now a possible conflict with Saudi Arabia with regards to the promotion of Somkid. Guess that the Government has started to think BIG after their success against the Reds.

    Does he 'buy' his promotion from the government? Because it is a norm culture of police department to 'buy' promotion? And hey what happens to the case a police chief in Region 5 accepted money from his subordinates to gain promotion?
