Orders measures to deal with inter-school brawls

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has instructed the Education Ministry to propose further measures to curb inter-school violence.

Mr Abhisit said during his weekly radio and TV broadcast yesterday that he had ordered Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat to report on the issue of violence among students from rival Bangkok schools during tomorrow's cabinet meeting.

He said he had instructed officials to take serious action against those instigating violence, and the Education Ministry would also discuss the matter with relevant agencies.

Take Oxford vs. Cambridge as an example. Let them compete, but in sports and fair. Let them race on the river in this historic boats to bring the fighting spirit into got ways. Make them proud of their campus in a positive way.

Never have these problems in China. People just want to get ahead. Perhaps the Thai police could learn from their Chinese colleagues

Kids in bangkok school comes from wealthy families or have parents as police officers or army officers, so they generally feel their parents will protect or bail them out if ever they get into a fight or shoot someone dead. The culture of impunity for rich thai families will bring dead and destruction througout the country for many generations. It cant get better it only get worst, its like a wild fire feeding each other to engulf the entire forest or country.
The problems must be solved starting from powerful parents, well connected uncles and aunts. Very soon all bangkok kids will start carrying guns to school to shoot their classmate and teachers. Best education system ever!

It boils down to the law being too soft especially student using guns to shoot at each other. In countries like Singapore and Malaysia, those student caught will be jailed for life or even get the death sentence.

As one reader said, this has been going on for more than 40 years and no one in Government has learned anything from these brawls.

If only the police together with the Minister of Education and school principals take these fights and shooting seriously, it will be another 40 years and yet this cannot be solved.

Hope PM Abhisit orders to curb this will be taken more seriously by the police and ministry of education.

The police need to take serious action and not just sit on their butts and enrich their pockets as reported time and again.

Frankly speaking, I'm a little surprised at the violence inside Thailand's schools. There's a complete, lack of discipline inside Thai schools.

This problem was brought to my attention by a Thai friend who works for the government and has a young teenage son attending a public school.

Teachers and parents must join together and resolve this problem. The government might be wise to hire veterans to patrol the school grounds and hallways.

You can't allow your children to join gangs, stay out late at night, lollygag by the river on motor-bikes, smoke cigarettes, and not attend classes.

The biggest problem I see in Thailand, is parent's allowing their young sons to become spoiled. Thai Parents do this by giving in to all the young boy's requests.

The future of a country depends on educating our children.

Sounds similar to hooliganism. First, no more uniforms. Second, immediate expulsion for any students involved in any incident of violent retribution on or off campus. Third, suspension of students to attend a tertiary institute for a minimum of 1 or more years. Fourth, criminal charges and incarceration.

Did anyone think to make a connection between the hazing articles written repetitively each year about Thai schools and universities at the start of school each year, and the Thai culture of following everything blindly from older people and others considered by society at large to be socially higher in rank? Let's face it: until the Thai education system, and Thai culture more generally, teach children to think instead of to blindly obey without thought, what can you expect?
