Kasit 'explains' Somkid's rise to Saudi envoy

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Tuesday he had met Saudi Arabia's charge d'affaires Nabil Ashri and explained the Police Commission's decision to promote Provincial Police Region 5 commander Somkid Boonthanom to the position of assistant national police chief.

Mr Kasit said he invited the Saudi charge d'affaires to see him at the Foreign Ministry Monday morning and clarified the situation.

After the meeting, he reported to Deputy Prime Minister overseeing security Suthep Thaugsuban at Government House.

Therefore, it was no longer necessary for Mr Suthep to send a letter of explanation, he said.

    Thugs are running the country.
Abasit, the spokesman has no authority.
Get a PM that has the guts to take control of this place.

Here is an idea to help settle the kerfuffle over K Somkid.

Thailand number 1 problem is the Southern war where the police dont seem to have a clue how to combat the terriosists

How about posting Somkid there for 1 year. The Saudis will have something to pray about each day, K Somkid will something useful to do and the bad guys will have a very high profile target to chase and they might leave the normal people alone.

This is a win win for all.

In many countries a criminal case with sufficient evidence for an indictment would lead to the dismissal, or at least suspension, of the law enforcement officer in question, pending the outcome of the trial. In Thailand such an officer's career not only survives, but flourishes.
Am I the only one who thinks that this speaks volumes about the ethics of government and society?

An indictment should mean that there is enough evidence to press charges. Somkid will probably be retired before this comes to trail, if at all. It seems peculiar that he would be promoted while this is still hanging over his head.

This promotion is to help him escape the law and set him free even he is guilty. Thailand has no respect for Saudi Arabia despite supplying thailand with oil. Saudi should consider an oil embargo to thailand to show its unhappiness. There is no law or rule of law only rule by law imposed by the police and army chiefs.

What is there to "Explain" conclude investigations and prosecute the guilty parties. Or Not "Up to you"

In most western democracies it is standard practice for police officers under investigation for possible criminal activities to be stood down on full pay until the completion of judicial processes.

Obviously being under suspicion regarding the disappearance of a foreign businessman is such an act of merit that it justifies a promotion instead. Amazing Thailand indeed!

Will this start a rash of similar acts of merit by other policemen keen for promotion?
