Ashri fears promotion may taint Ruwaili case
The Saudi charge d'affaires to Thailand has told a house panel he was worried the recent promotion of Pol Lt Gen Somkid Boonthanom to assistant national police chief would affect the investigation into the officer's alleged role in the disappearance of a Saudi businessman.
Puea Thai Party MP for Udon Thani Torpong Chaiyasarn, who chairs the committee, said Nabil Ashri was concerned Pol Lt Gen Somkid's promotion would undermine the inquiry into the disappearance of Mohammad al-Ruwaili in 1990.
Mr Torpong invited Riyadh's top diplomat to meet his committee yesterday to hear his views on Pol Lt Gen Somkid's promotion. Another Puea Thai MP, Pracha Prasopdee, chairman of the house justice and human rights committee, also met Mr Ashri.
