Deputy mayor embroiled in bribe scandal

The deputy mayor of Muang Phayao Municipality has been arrested over allegations that he demanded money in exchange for a council position.

Cherdsak Suktua was accused yesterday of demanding 150,000 baht from a job applicant for a garden landscaper position at the municipal office in Phayao.

A civic network based in Chiang Rai filed a complaint with the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission. PACC secretary-general Pinyo Thongchai said a sting operation was set up to catch the deputy mayor.

I have a Thai friend whose wife teaches school about 30 km away.

I asked him why she doesn't apply to transfer to a more local school.

He said it would reqire a bribe of 200,000 baht to get it approved.

So his wife continues to waste time, money and fuel to commute.

Although the practise is pervasive, how many people are in jail for it?????????????

Now if they can just do this for the military, police, schools, etc., they will be headed in the right direction! Too much bribery going on here...

Wow, with such amount to by the position, it means the position include keeping of 'kickback' from contractors.
