Suthep: Security tightened in capital

Authorities are stepping up security in the capital after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva warned the public to brace for more violence in the next two weeks, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Friday.

He said he is worried about the planned rally of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Sept 19 to mark the fourth anniversary of the military coup that ousted Thaksin Shinawatra.

However, there was no need for people to panic, he said.

"We have a duty to protect the country," he said. "I have ordered authorities to tighten measures. More security will be provided for important figures and at important locations."

He believed the violence in Bangkok had nothing to do with southern unrest.
