Tense time for riverside folk

Locals wait all night for a flood that never came

Residents of the vulnerable Wat Chat Kaew Jongkollanee community on the Thon Buri side of central Bangkok lay awake most of Monday night waiting fearfully for a predicted tidal surge to force the Chao Phraya River to burst its banks.

Having heard through the media that the Royal Thai Navy's Hydrographic Department had warned the river would peak at 9.09am yesterday, sleep was a luxury they could not afford.

Tawee Jongchanasito, 65, said she woke up with a start at 1am yesterday as she was worried her home would be hit by surging flood waters.
