Provincial governor polls 'could ease political rifts'

CHIANG MAI : Political scientists have proposed provincial governor elections as a solution to the nation's political divisions.

Thanet Charoenmuang, a political science lecturer at Chiang Mai University, told a seminar organised by King Prajadhipok's Institute yesterday that making governors electable will ease social and political rifts.

Bangkok and Pattaya, which are special administrative zones, have an elected city chief, but in all other provinces, governors are chosen by the Interior Ministry.
