Former communist rebels get B500m in state cash

More than 500 million baht in financial aid has been given to the first batch of former communist insurgents who laid down their weapons in the 1980s to cooperate with the state.

The recipients are among 2,452 former members of the Communist Party of Thailand in 38 provinces who have qualified for the payout of 225,000 each.

The first payment ceremony took place yesterday in Nakhon Ratchasima and was presided over by 2nd Army chief Thawatchai Samutsakhon as state funds totalling 162.9 million baht were handed to 724 former communist insurgents from five northeastern provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Surin and Amnat Charoen.
