Pattaya Beach could disappear in 5 years

Sand erosion could cause Pattaya Beach to vanish in the next five years, a Chulalongkorn University researcher says.

Pattaya Beach is facing a severe sand erosion problem, prompting business owners to stack sandbags around their deckchairs to keep them from being washed away by waves. The erosion has significantly reduced the beach area over the past 10 years, experts say.

The science faculty's head of disaster studies, Thanawat Jarupongsakul, has released a paper which shows erosion at the beach is now "critical".

Perhaps it's too much to hope that the whole rotten town will disappear with it.

Use the technique that Dubai used to build their islands. Suction dredges and depsoit with hoses.

"This involves 200,000 cubic metres of sand being filled along the 4.48 kilometres of the beach to expand its width to 30 metres."

Before I read this I was sure they would setup a work group to study the problem etc., but I was wery impressed to, for once, to see the right (and only) solution to a problem in the same article as the actual problem.

So rent a dredger, some staff, start working, and then do it all over again in 10 years. Problem solved.

Constructing barriers to "catch" the sand could also work, but due to potential sideeffects such as changing currents and increased pollution, this could backfire. The dregder is a failsafe solution.

What beach! You don't get to use any of the beach thanks to the 'deackchair people" nothing but chairs and parasols. and then the only bits without them have jet ski's and banna boats on them,
And if you do decide to sit down and 'relax' you are hassled every 3 minutes to buy something from someone! Let the sand go and lets have a very steep cliff to push them all off!

Those darn tourists, stealing the sand are they. Not sure how to shut down the black market in Pattaya sand. probably the tourists are trying to bring the memory back to their foreign homes in bottles. Will have to have new scanners at the airport. Perhaps airport can borrow scanners from Army...covert from bomb detection to sand detection...easily done ...just change label on front...same technology inside..

It is to be hoped that the scam artists and the thugs disappear just as quickly. Pattaya has become a snake pit with the rule of law reduced to a handful of Baht and the official nod to illegal activities. It is a case study in how to kill tourism.

I figured it would disappear first from all the scumbag vendors and the 10 gazillion beach chairs. Of course it's had to walk down the beach with all the trash.
