Asia 'needs to learn' lessons of disasters

The powerful earthquake and tsunami in Japan should serve as a lesson for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region about the significance of disaster preparedness schemes, a seminar was told.

The region has the highest number of people suffering from natural disasters each year. About 85% of casualties worldwide are in Asia, according to Bhichit Rattakul, executive director of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC).

"The death toll of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan is high despite the country being well prepared for natural disasters. This means we have to learn more about disaster preparedness if we want the Asia-Pacific region to be a safer place," Mr Bhichit told a seminar on disaster risk reduction on Wednesday.

Put Content In Its Place - When it comes to your property, what do you expect in case of loss, e.g., hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire? If you are like most of the insuring public you draw a blank on that question. "Control the element of surprise with the rule book by your side!" It's the content that matters. www.DisasterPrepared.net
