Rebels 'cross in for major strike'

Insurgents from the Pattani United Liberation Organisation and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Coordinate trained in bomb-making overseas have infiltrated the South in preparation for a major strike, an intelligence source says.

The young militants entered the region by crossing the border between Narathiwat and Kelantan state in Malaysia, the source said.

They are currently in and around Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla and are plotting a major campaign of violence in urban areas in the near future, the source said.

Awae Kaelae, a suspected Pulo leader, made his way into the region from a hideout overseas to take full command of the insurgency, the source said.

Attacks may target villages in remote and mountainous areas rather than downtown areas, the source said.

Insurgents were bent on demoralising locals and Tuesday's car bomb that injured 42 people in Narathiwat was an example of that, the source said.

Police officers and Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, yesterday continued their search of an undisclosed vehicle repair garage for clues to the bombing.

A pickup truck used in the bomb attack was believed to have been given a paint job at the garage in Muang district after suspected insurgent leader Amran Ming, 28, and his members are thought to have stolen it from Bacho district.

Police officers in 13 Narathiwat districts were yesterday trained how to operate three GT 200 bomb detectors supplied by the 4th Army to enhance their ability to prevent bombings.

In Yala, a fertiliser warehouse caught fire in Muang district early yesterday morning.

Damage was estimated at 300,000 baht. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The Bangkok Post has already reported how police in Thailand have been killed while using the worthless GT200 detectors. The device is a freely swinging transistor radio antenna on a box, and has never been proven to work. Every time it has been tested, it was as accurate as flipping a coin to decide which box the explosive sample was hidden inside.

Bangkok Post, please do not pass along stories about police being trained in using 3 more GT200 detectors when your own reporters have shown Thai police have been killed by this fraud that failed to warn them of bombs!!

Obviously the fertiliser warehouse fire was a tactic. It will be much easier to steal the fertiliser to make a bomb. is it guarded 24/7???

    Re: Discussion 2.

Dave. Can you explain why & how Malaysia can belong to the British? British is the other side of the world. How come they can own Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Burma, Sir Lanka, India and so on…?

Did the British buy Malaysia from the Sultan or the indigenous of Malaysia? Not right? British actually robbed & stole and then colonized Malaysia by force likewise to all those countries mentioned-above. Once colonized Malaysia and all those countries, British started to collect taxes until they became independent. They are worst than day light robber and here you are saying it was a gift from the British.

Actually chhiev hoy the land was a gift from the British after the Thais were stretcher bearers in world war 1, Malaysia belonged to the British at the time.

I agree with you about Cambodia's land however, the Khymer empire stretched all the way to Bangkok at one point.
