Military leaders unified against a coup

Meeting of 'movers and shakers' fuels rumours

The military's top brass have vehemently rejected rumours about an imminent coup d'etat sparked by a recent meeting of leading political figures.

Supreme Commander Songkitti Jaggabatara, third from left, appears at a press conference at the Royal Thai Air Force headquarters yesterday to dispel persistent rumours of an imminent military coup. Also present are army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, left, navy chief Kamthorn Phumhiran, second left, and air force chief Itthaporn Subhawong, right. WASSANA NANUAM

The statement was made yesterday by Supreme Commander Songkitti Jaggabatara in the presence of the commanders of all the armed forces _ army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, navy commander Kamthorn Phumhiran, and air force chief Itthaporn Subhawong _ at a press conference called after the monthly meeting of senior officers.

Stekk (discussion 19). You'd rather have Thaksin back to destroy the country?

What is the explanation given by the army leaders to justify a kind of legitimacy they could have to act independently of the civilian political power?

  • Discussion 21 : 07/04/2011 at 11:39 AM21

The simple fact of expressing in public an opinion should conduct them in prison!

What exactly are you all whining about?

Mr prime minister. You are responsible for this arrogance of the armed forces . You have relied on them , not put them in their place and you continue to provide them with tax payees money for their toys ane personal benefits . A strong leader would ave sacked these generals . You and because of you , we are going down the road of a Myanmar type situation . I pray we get the strength to vote you out before you destroy this country

Last week I attended a press conference in BKK for a charity organisation to help Thai kids. BP know the one they were also there.
It began at 1pm but all morning the Farang organisers were meeting the military to have this event cleared to proceed with their blessing.
    Whats it all about???

"Any military unit which moves troops out of barracks without permission will be deemed to have committed insurrection".

Sounds like a very clear warning to the many dissidents in the military - the ones who don't like the current Army leadership's monopoly.

In Thailand there is no getting away from the fact that no government stays in power without the support of the military. They can afford to insist on "no coup" - until it happens! The last "coup" was to remove a corrupt government (as they saw it). Many in Thailand regard the army as the government of last resort.

Their lips are moving. Here comes another coup!!!

Democrats led government must show to the people that they were not installed by the military. All defense spending proposal should be KIV until after the election. I hope this will not result in a coup. Those men in uniform who spoke publicly against the government should be suspended and charged. They have broken the law.
