Death toll tumbles 25% from last year

The number of deaths from accidents during the seven-day Songkran long holidays this year has fallen by 25% from the same period last year.

Chavarat Charnvirakul, the interior minister and director of the Road Safety Centre told a news conference yesterday that from April 11 to April 17 this year, the number of road accidents stands at 3,215. This is 301 cases, or 8.56% lower than the 3,516 cases during the Songkran period last year.

The number of deaths from road accidents this year is 271 - 90 fewer than the 361 deaths last year.

    Road Safety Centre cannot add (deaths) and should be told that Bangkok is not a province.

    I don't believe it for a second. Nothing has changed from previous years to reflect such a sharp drop. Idiots still speed, drive drunk, and don't wear seat belts or motorcycle helmets - and they have no driver's training.

    The lame campaigns did nothing to cause the 25% reduction.

    Under-reporting may have.
