Cabinet to discuss WHC implications

The cabinet will on Tuesday discuss the legal implications of Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti's announcement that Thailand was withdrawing from the World Heritage Convention, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Monday.

Mr Abhisit said government agencies  would be instructed to study and report on the legal implications for Thailand after its withdrawal from the WHC and steps which need to be taken by the next government  after the July 3 election.

The withdrawal from the WHC would have no effect on  ancient sites and national parks in Thailand already listed as world heritage sites.

Withdraw or not, i just wish that there w't be any war along the border because no one of the people there need it; beside the PAD, AV gov't and the high rank army who are being in BKK.....

Don't worry. Even though Thailand is no longer a member, Thailand can still host next year's WHC meeting.

Put it to a vote, and I am sure >90% of the delegate still like to meet in Thailand, especially Pattaya & Phuket.

Why just the minutes of discussion with Cambodia, Thailand government need to wait for approval from parliament but for the resignation from WHC, no need to wait for parliament? What is the laws and regulations system of Thailand?

It would be worthwhile if Abhisit and others hold a discussion on such implications before it declares to withdraw membership from WHC. However, this is just a childlike action. The resignation from WHC will be approved until next elected government is in power; current caretaker government is no power to have any binding decision. Abhisit just make this to benefits voters' support.

I would imagine the people living along the border will form their own view about whether or not the Government is doing everything it reasonably can to enable them to lead a normal life.

And that is leaving aside the question of whether or not the Government has a credible policy for the future economic development of their area.

If I was living there I would feel very badly let down and, if I could, would vote with my feet ie go and live somewhere else.

"Mr Abhisit said government agencies concerned would be instructed to study legal effects on Thailand after its withdrawal from the WHC and steps to be taken by the new government to come after the July 3 election."

Thinking before starting to draw is the best way to avoid wrong doing or mistakes.

" Despite the withdrawal, Thailand still has the right to reapply for WHC membership, he said." Then why you decided to withdraw?

There is no reason for Cambodia to create tension as a result of Thailand's withdrawal from the WHC. It is AV government's problem. What AV government going to do is throwing tantrum

I would say that it’s unwise for this Administration (Abhisit) to rush into a decision that would have grave effects on the next Administration (???). We cannot rush into this and leave the mess for others to take care of.
