ICJ orders all troops out

PM says Thailand is not put at a disadvantage

The International Court of Justice's decision to set up a "provisional demilitarised zone" around the Preah Vihear temple and order Thailand and Cambodia to immediately withdraw their troops from it will not have a binding effect on Thai sovereignty, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says.

"The ruling is a temporary provisional measure and it will not have a binding commitment to Thai sovereignty and the ruling does not place Thailand at a disadvantage," Mr Abhisit said smilingly to reporters yesterday evening after learning of the ruling.

He said he would meet the army chief, the defence and foreign ministers, and representatives of the National Security Council and the Council of State today to discuss measures to be followed in the wake of the ICJ ruling.

If we're going to be completly objective and impartial lets look at the Bangkok Post's editorial stating that the ICJ's decision will not have a binding effect on THAI SOVEREIGNTY. Because a final decision hasn't been reached yet and it's probably a play on words, I believe the comment should have read ... 'ALLEGED' THAI SOVEREIGNTY.

"It's not easy to withdraw troops from the area," said Lt Gen Thawatchai.
The DMZ, which is about 2.6 miles wide, has only ~4000 Thai troops. Perhaps if the troops were blind-folded and ordered to crawl backwards, it might be somewhat difficult to withdraw?

Winner and Loser of the ICJ’s decision!
    - Thailand’s attempt to ask the ICJ to remove Cambodia’s request for a reinterpretation and provisional measure from the general list has failed by a unanimous decision.
    - Thailand has repeatedly refused to allow the Indonesian Observers Team into the disputed zone.
    - Thailand must not obstruct Cambodia’s non-military access into the area, hence to some extent, recognized the ownership.

The only point that Thailand can take out of the ICJ’s decision is that Cambodia have to also withdraw her troops from the DMZ. And yet, many in Thailand view this as a win for Thailand, LOL…

"Hun Sen losing face after being forced to remove his troops. He better cut a deal with his fugitive friend or he may lose even more."

what did he lose? Cambodian appeal to the court to have Thai troops remove from the area. The court demanded both Thai and Khmer troop removed. Khmer wanted international observers at the area and was granted. But the real case would be the upcoming interpretation of the 1962 ruling which awarded Khmer the temple which was clearly built by Khmer on Khmer soil. That will be the real blockbuster.

It will take time for the Thai military to stop ruining Thailand and the Thai people's happiness.

Everything can be sorted in less than a day, it's not too dificult really.
And it should be sorted out once and for all tomorrow in Bali at the Asean meeting.

It is a time to heal the wounds for both Thailand and Cambodia. Let turn the border towns on both sides of the border as the economic zones and peaceful places. Let the Thais and Cambodians dance together. Stop raise the issue of racial hatred or ethnocentric behaviors.
