Poll finds corruptrulers 'tolerable'

The majority of Thais believe a corrupt government is acceptable if it brings prosperity to the people and the country, an Abac Poll released yesterday has found.

Asked how they felt about graft, 64.5% of respondents said a corrupt government was acceptable if it helps the country prosper and they too stood to benefit, while 35.5% said it was unacceptable.

Interviewees who voiced no objection to corrupt practices included 71% of youths under 20 years of age, 71% of those with an average income of over 20,000 baht per month, 72.3% of students, 67% of private business owners, 64.9% of employees of private companies, 56.4% of farmers and workers, and 50.9% of government officials and state enterprise workers.
