GISTDA director Anont Sanitwong na Ayutthaya said flood waters had risen above sandbags and flooded roads in the city. Administrative officials and soldiers had been assembled to prevent flood waters from entering inner Bangkok, he said.Mr Anont said a satellite photo showed that 13 districts of Bangkok were at risk of flooding -- Nong Khang Phlu, Thung Song Hong, Sai Mai, Khlong Thanon, Anusawari, Chorakhe Bua, Lat Phrao, Khlong Kum, Hua Mak, Saphan Sung, Khlong Song Ton Nun and Lat Krabang.Nearby provinces also at risk include Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao.Mr Anont said people in these areas of the city should prepare for possible flooding, avoid using inundated roads and monitor the flood situation closely. They should also prepare emergency supplies and be ready to evacuate temporarily.

While the forests in Thailand are disappearing altogether, there are too many trees in American forests than ever before. Forests are renewable resources, and with proper care, it will supply Thai people with plenty of timbers all year round. Thai people need to know that towing a bridge with a handful of small tugboats does absolutely nothing to speed up the flow of a river. However, keep their forests thick and lust is the only to prevent this worsening seasonal flooding from reoccurring.

Khun JerryC#6, with your idea of an gigantic dam, an equally gigantic piece of land north of BKK would have to be set aside to remain underwater permanently. The only long-term solution is simple, cheap, and can be implemented immediately, but will require a determination of will on the part of Thai people to begin restoring the forests to their pristine condition. However, I don't know how bad and costly the worsening seasonal flooding has to become, in order to open the eyes of Thai people. And remember that "...whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." Therefore, if he sows massive deforestation, that he will also reap massive flooding. But if he sows good stewardship over his forests, that he will reap quality living with enough water during the dry season without this deadly seasonal flooding during the wet season, no to mention a steady supply of timbers all year round.

just curious... would it be possible to build a dam which was so big, it could prevent these annual floods from re-occurring all the time? a dam this big would also eliminate the lack of water during droughts that seem to be an annual thing too.

to disc 1 where do you think the people in bangkok get their rice or their tyres for their expensive cars? Alot of thais in bkk are only working there to send money to family in rural areas. Oh have you ever been anywhere in thai - bkk is a hole compared to other parts and would prob look nicer under water!!

not climate change - development is the cause of poor flood management. Roads are built without consideration of proper culverts for water flows, buildings are constructed on 100% of available land without proper drainage plans, water builds up around them. we only need to see last years example where flooding was caused in one city area because a klong created to handle floods and water flows was reduced to accommodate a hospital extension. man messes with nature and pays the price. The USA learned the same costly lesson in the Florida everglades for the acquifer flow from north to south that they blocked with roads and development and could have created an environmental disaster, we are doing exactly the same with the Chao Phya River basin and all of our river systems in the central plains. It is widely reported that while ever there is money to be had from developers to approve their projects, officials will keep on signing off approvals. TIT

ianprince 1: You obviously live in Bangkok, if you are in Thailand! cost comparison - all that counts is money in your book - how sad. A heads-up for you: Life is what we are all here for and we can only live it well if we do it together (that means ALL of us). If the the powerful and previous Thai governments back through time had put life first there would be very little, if any human flood tragedy.

Don't you think that if Bangkok does suffer floods like the rest of Thailand, that something would actually be done to prevent it happening in the future. By this I don't mean building more flood gates so everyone else, bar Bangkok, is flooded. Surely this has been going on is this country for far too long and climate change will surely make the matter worse in years to come.

Bankok should be protected at all cost because the population density is highest. It doesn't matter if elsewhere there is flood, because the damage cost in comparison is small.
