NATURAL DISASTER
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has admitted that Bangkok's flood prevention system has not been completed and her government is racing against time and the rising waters.
In response to the situation, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has set up nearly 200 shelters to cater for possible evacuations.
The prime minister discussed the current flood situation with relevant authorities at the government's flood relief centre at Don Mueang airport yesterday morning. They agreed that Bangkok needs three strong floodwalls to protect it from flooding.

Government officials have bought up all the sand to resell, corruption at the finest again. Thai official praying on their own people. This is word from construction companies who can't buy any sand.

Whenever a high ranking government official says, "don't panic", THAT is when it's time to panic.

Does anybody really think that a lesson will be learned from this flooding? Even if it hits Bangkok? That people will demand an end to this predictable annual devastation? That all the stops will be pulled out, water-management experts from other countries consulted, and a long-term intelligent solution implemented and followed? Or will it be the Thai-style, ‘face-saving’ mode of finger-pointing and no accountability that is always followed by no change?

Well according to my Southeast Asian Ecology class at Mahidol. Thailand has one of the highest deforestation rates in SEA. However, that problem is a tough one to solve and a very sensitive issue. People with influence profit from it. Proper water management is great if it can be implemented but i think in the long term its really about proper foresting and not over doing it. The forest is natures sponge. Then again policy makers wont really try to change anything. It is up to the people to create incentives for the politicians to develop long term plans (a pinch of sarcasm).

D9 Wandee not sure how you count years, but the Dems were in charge for about three years, the PPP for about a year before that, the army a year before that and uncle Thaksin for six years prior to that. Uncle Takki and his troops have had 7 years at the helm without effecting the annual flood damage and are back again, don't blame the Dems because they didn't resolve all of Thailand's woes during the their short term in office.

Hope from this flooding disaster, thailand would be serious in implementing a better water management system in future, though it looks sceptical whether that plan would be in Puea Thai's priority list. Again its the poor who suffer.

ianprince D13 - "If AV is in rule, none of this flood would have happen, as AV govt has a good team and not ill-prepared." Have a look at last year's forgotten floods: http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/205050/prompt-response-to-hat-yai-floods

D7, I think the point D3 is making is that so called Red shirt leaders such as Jatuporn and Nattawut are conspicuous by their absence. As for reds now being dressed in "civilian " clothes , that has more to do with "no pay no play" than anything else.

Ill prepared. Yes, this is what you get with YS govt. If AV is in rule, none of this flood would have happen, as AV govt has a good team and not ill-prepared.
