The government has ordered every available measure be taken to protect Bangkok's inner-city commercial and residential districts from flooding as torrents of northern run-off began to sweep through floodwalls in outer suburbs, inundating many communities.
Meeting of minds Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, second from left, and Deputy Bangkok Governor Porntep Techapaibul, left, discuss flood prevention plans with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Justice Minister Pracha Promnok, right, at the government’s Flood Relief Operations Centre at Don Mueang airport yesterday.
Residents of Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao were warned yesterday to watch out for more flooding.

Jerome D11: Actually, what the correct term for the mass of water outside Bangkok is scientifically correctly called is completely irrelevant for what I tried to say and I did therfore not care that much when I wrote my slightly sarcastic comment. And I do not know where in my comment I write anything about what direction the river flows. (Heartie: that was actually a interesting piece of information. I did not know that before)

jerome, Discussion 11, 'there is no ocean south of Bangkok, but the South Chinese Sea' There is the Gulf of Thailand, where all the water is running to, not the South China Sea, which is futher down. The Chao Phraya River cuts right through Bangkok and flows into the Gulf of Thailand. 'Anyway, you should know the water in the rivers flows from the springs towards the sea, and not from the sea to the spring.' The Mekong River, which flows into the South China Sea changes direction twice a year and flows UP from the sea for quite some time.

Something to debate. I do not see the Bangkokians complaining when the unharvested paddy fields outside of Bangkok are submerged to prevent the flood waters from reaching them.

I know this might sound a little "jaded", but I really wish the areas where all the elites and Hi-So's live would become totally flooded the way most of Ayutthaya is. My reasoning for that is because then and ONLY THEN will the BKK Snobs, Generals & Politicians get off their collective backsides and actually DO something about the flooding, which is is getting worse each year, not better. I fear that this year will be no different than previous floods - lots of talk, lots of promises, committees appointed, plans made, and as soon as the sun is shining and the water is gone, so will the promises, committees & plans. Flood the home of every politician, every general, every hi-so and "elite" and THEN something will definitely be done. If they escape the flooding, or have only minimal flooding, they could care less about the rest of the country. But let 1 - 1.5 meters of water come into THEIR mansions, and then see what happens.

Mojb, there is no ocean south of Bangkok, but the South Chinese Sea, geologically it's totally different. Anyway, you should know the water in the rivers flows from the springs towards the sea, and not from the sea to the spring.

It's nice to see PM Yingluck and government officials and opposition shadow PM Abhisit working together to solve the flood situation. Hope both parties can get together more to solve other issues after the flood problems are solved and in this way, will bring Thailand forward.

"But he admitted some suburbs, particularly in the east, west and north of Bangkok would be hit by run-off." I might be wrong and a little bit confused but we have the ocean in the south so does this not mean that all suburbs will be hit?
