Next flood victims prepare for worst

SPECIAL REPORT: The government has decided to drain floodwaters through the eastern and western sides of Bangkok, so many around the capital know trouble is heading their way

A last-minute race against time has begun in areas surrounding Bangkok after the government resolved to drain water to the sea through the western and eastern sides of the city.

Map provided by the flood centre shows the plan to keep inner Bangkok dry by diverting floodwaters around the capital.

Narong Ouiyaharn, 45, head of Moo 5 village in tambon Ban Bor in Muang district of Samut Sakhon, said local authorities had distributed 20-30 sandbags to each household in his village to cope with the arrival of floodwater, which is expected next Thursday.

"What worries us most is rising sea levels during the arrival of the floodwater. If this happens…” Is the rising sea level so unpredictable? I thought there is a clear schedule for falling and rising tide.

The tide can be predicted but not the effect of the wind which could either push the tide higher up the river or keep it back. Also, the timing of the flood arrival from upstream can have a big effect just a few hours either side of high tide.

Sure we can cross reference at Google etc, but here we are talking about BP, being an English language newspaper, should take the trouble to provide a translated map if they want to publish it. It is like trying to say that BP could publish any news in Thai language in their paper and readers should go on Google to have it translated to understand the news if they wish.

This shows how helpless and without a plan this government is.
There only mission is to control everyone and everything.

Thank you RiceField #8 for the Google Map.
Why does the Bangkok Post not publish a link like that?

    D2, Ricefield,

Out of 4 planned drainage tunnels, only 1 (at Rama IX) has been completed, after big delays and huge problems between BMA and the consortium that built the tunnel, and the attached electricity generator.

The other 3 tunnels are yet to be built, but given the experience with the first one, I don't think anaybody is lining up to sign a contract.

Or you could just use the Google Crisis Map available in English.

It appears some people need to learn to read Thai. If you can't figure out this map in Thai pull up google earth and cross reference it.

For those of you who cannot read: The blue represent water, same as anywhere else. And the white is where we are, same color as the face of people living in Bangkok, no matter if you are brown, black or white.

Nearly every recent year, it's been 'The worst floods....." and six months later there are cries of "The worst drought in memory...." When will Thais begin to plan sensibly for annual climate swings? It's not too late to slow Man's incessent destruction of forests and natural habitat.
