Flood threat keeps capital on red alert

Bickering over who's in charge confuses public

Floods continue to threaten Bangkok but there is confusion among the public about the deluge dangers, who is in charge of operations and who to believe as authorities continue to bicker.

Authorities yesterday made all-out efforts to reinforce a 4km flood barrier along Khlong Rangsit canal in tambon Lak Hok of Pathum Thani and Chulalongkorn sluice gate in Pathum Thani.

Both barriers are the last flood prevention lines to prevent overflow entering Bangkok, particularly after a sluice gate in Khlong Ban Phrao in Pathum Thani's Sam Khok district broke.

@Disc 11 - Yes we should be inviting the flood experts - the dutch.

If the military doesn't try to contain the floods, more people will die and there will be even greater damages to the economy. Yes they didn't do any preventative management, but we can't blame the military for trying to save the country now can we.

The belated efforts by the Gov't and the military to contain the floods is akin to installing smoke detectors during a raging inferno. All these efforts are wasted. Flood defenses should be built in the dry season. Why the USA are sending experts is also puzzling. We should be inviting Dutch experts to advise on flood defenses, not the people who cleaned up after Katrina.

Thank you Bangkok Post for the map that is so clear in understanding the risk and the clear report of the two men who have high ego and requiring people to listen to either of them exclusively. BP is only the messenger in reporting the confusion and not party to the confusion.

"Bickering over who's in charge confuses public" ... It's the REPORTING of the bickering that confuses the public - The Bangkok Post should take responsibility for it's own role in things, and maybe, for once, try and report necessary facts rather than just any old piece of idle gossip!

Discussion 2 bkk-farang: johninbkk is correct. A PM does not need to be an expert in all aspects. Just like the CEO of SONY corporation does not necessarily be a holder of a first honour PhD degree in electronics engineering. Management of a large corporation or even a country requires division of labour and delegation of power to individual subordinates. The PM acts as the final decision maker after collating all opinions and recommendations from respective cabinet ministers.

bkk-farang D2 - You are right - YS should have been a prime minister experienced in flood control before she was elected as prime minister in charge of flood control. FYI, she has cabinet ministers in charge that have previous experience in such matters. Her job is to choose, coordinate, and lead skilled people - something she has been doing in industry for 20 years.
