Sukhumbhand shows he's in charge of city

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra are headed in different directions regarding the way both have been handling the flood crisis, which has now reached the capital's outskirts.

Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra holds a Buddha image during a religious rite at City Pillar on Oct 8. The prayer ceremony was aimed at keeping floodwaters away from the capital.

MR Sukhumbhand has shown his management skills by effectively mobilising all units under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to fend off floodwaters flowing downstream of the Chao Phraya River.

I agree with robingrant 100%! The real issue is to alleviate the suffering of people affected by such a devastating natural disaster, not to engage in pathetic petty political point scoring! In fairness to the PM she is doing her best to handle this situation and is doing so with an infrastructure inherited from the administration of her predecessor! So for disgruntled elements amongst the ranks of the current opposition, aided and abetted by a sympathetic media mouthpiece, to voice their criticism smacks of political opportunism and sour grapes, best described as disingenuous in the extreme!

Once the situation returns to "normal" then by all means have a robust debate and point your fingers to your hearts content! In the meantime, let's pull together and help those who need it most!

How disappointing, in the face of such a national crisis, to read yet another politically partisan piece of reporting. The somewhat out-of-context reference in the article to Thaksin and the Defence Act betrays the author's not so hidden agenda. The author has also failed to mention that MR Sukhumbhand has, like FROC, issued several contradictory statements on the flooding situation, and he has failed to prevent flooding in many parts of the city.

That is not a ctiticism of the Governor, he, like everyone else, is doing his best to cope with a huge crisis, which is probably beyond anyone's capability to effectively manage. for example, today's BP reports that 1.2 million cubic metres of water is approaching the Rangsit area, which can only absorb 400,000 cubic metres! Everyone should read L.H. Mak's letter published today, it adopts a very welcome mature and balanced approach to the current situation.
