Flood centre tells Bangkokians to take a vacation

The government's Flood Relief Operations Centre (Froc) has advised people in Bangkok to leave the capital for their own safety this long weekend, if they can.

The centre said on Thursday that Bangkokians should take the opportunity during the special long holiday weekend to visit tourist destinations or to go and stay with relatives in flood-free provinces.

The suggestions came after a prediction that the floodwater from the North will peak in Bangkok soon, and be made worse by peak high tides from Oct 28 to 31, which will cause the floodwaters from the North to bank up.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra

Advising people to take vacations when 90% of the entire population lives paycheck to paycheck? This is how far out of touch with reality FROC really is. Let's see, daily wage of 206 thb. Budget hotel in Hua Hin 1,500 a night plus transportation to get there. Maybe FROC needs a quick refresher in Personal Finance 101? People living paycheck to paycheck never take vacations in the real world

I left Bangkok last week, lucky am I.But it does worry me about Bangkok people.Of course time is not to argue who is to blame, but how can people who govern this country let the capital with 10 millions people fled the city? The flood threat was announced months ago and time was given to them to carry and handle the situation in best way possible.Govern is to predict and has a vision, evidently there is no pro-active measures and zero vision. If the PM is V.Abhisit,I will ask him and all the govt.to resign. It's not a matter of Red or yellow or white govt. They are not capable to help the people they suppose to serve and protect.Just imagine how it would be with a worst catastrophe.
God bless Thailand, the country I love.

Only when Bangkok floods does it's inhabitants really care. It's been flooding like this and worse in the Northeast for months.

Discussion 1, Cassie, I hope you already have your bus ticket or arrangements booked by now. Otherwise, you may find it difficult to get a ticket at the Mor Chit station, well, to anywhere. You should take a flight and head north looking down at the water for half an hour (bearing in mind that all that water needs to pass through Bangkok) before you say, 'people REALLY need to get a grip...we'll be lucky to get knee deep.' People on my flight were yelling profanities like 'oh s@#%!.' Others took one look and covered their faces because it was too much to bear. Also, remember that the government said it would take 4-6 weeks for the water to recede. Many people to the north have long since past the four week mark. Their troubles go far beyond the polluted water. Take a look at the girl swimming in the water! This is just the start.

“If the situation deteriorates, Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Surasawadi has the authority to decide whether to order all people in Bangkok to evacuate”. The Science and Technology Minister can order all people to leave? Really? Science and Technology Minister? Why didn’t he introduce the use of high technology in the earlier stages of this flood? Wouldn’t that have been more in his field? Science and Technology Minister can ORDER all people to leave?!? Always Amazed!

Cassie, No disrespect but it's obvious you read and believe too many newspapers.

Sukhumbhand: "We're considering whether we should order.."

Well sir, take your time to consider. By the time you give the order, many of us would be sitting on our rooftops.

How did such an indecisive, attention-seeking person get elected as a governor? Putting people at risks by giving false hope is utterly and morally wrong!

Can you imagine the chaos created having 12 million people escaping Bangkok all at once with probably less than 1 hours notice.

These people REALLY need to get a grip.

It's not going to be a biblical flood. In most areas of Bangkok, we'll be lucky to get knee deep. It will be nothing more than it is during a typical heavy rain during rainy season. It'll just hang around longer.

I'm farang, and I'm not panicking in the slightest. I have a bit of food and water, and other than a visa run to Cambodia tomorrow, I'm planning on settling in in my Bangkok apartment for a nice weekend, reading, watching TV and surfing the net. If this "flood" suddenly materializes to biblical proportions, I'll eat my hat.

Meanwhile, I believe the governor. Stay calm. Get a bit of extra food. And chill. All those rushing off to Hua Hin and Pattaya are alreading finding there are no available hotels and all the food in the supermarkets has been bought up in panic buying.

    Crazy.
