New Chulalongkorn semester looms over evacuees

Chulalongkorn University has provided some comforts for more than 500 flood victims for the past two weeks, but the start of the new semester next week poses a fresh problem if they are still unable to return to their homes.

Samoe Phudee, 50, was polishing his boots on Monday, ready to go work at the BTS Mor Chit station where he has a job as a security guard.

"I'm glad I could get back to work, not only because I'm earning money again but also because I don't want to be a burden on my colleagues," said the father of two children, who moved to Chulalongkorn from Don Mueang on Oct 27.

The street around his workplace has been flooded for a few days already, but the skytrain is still running.

Mr Samoe, his wife, younger son and his nephew are among some 500 evacuees staying at Chulalongkorn University's Sports Centre, where an assistance centre was opened on Oct 25 by the Friends in Need (of "Pa") Volunteers Foundation, also known as the Princess Pa foundation, and the Thai Red Cross Society.

I'm appalled to see that Chula is considering to forego their good deeds and ignore its humanitarian role in taking care of 500+ people in needs...a critical time to mitigate some of the calamity for the people of Thailand.

It's ashamed for Chula even thinking about the issue of starting a new semester and trying to get rid of the people who are residing at the facility now.

I don't know whether Chula still have a heart left. They used to be warm, kind, generous, and have strong interest in the welfare of the public what I was at Chula, back in 1960. Whatever happened to Chula nowadays! Come on have a heart;open your heart and embrace all.

Who cares about the new semester; that can wait. I'm sure Chula is smart enough to find a resolution that would maintain its reputation so we all alumni can be proud of.

To help English speakers. The correct spelling of Friends in Need in Thai is เพื่อนพึ่งพา, but in this case its เพื่อนพึ่งภา, which is I believe a reference to Princess Pa - spelt ภา in Thai. That's why the foundation's name is written that way.
