Exorbitant boat fees annoy

B200-500 charged for trips to mouth of soi

White-collar employees in Bangkok affected by the flooding are up in arms over exorbitant fees charged by boat owners to ferry them to work, or even to the mouth of their soi.

Some have asked the police to arrest boat operators and demanded state agencies arrange free or cheaper boat services in the city's flood-hit districts.

"It is a really expensive boat ride. I pay up to 200 baht for the short ride to work and then back home every day," said a state-enterprise official.

What use to take me 20min drive to work, now requires 4.5 hours travel with combination of two boat rides, and two hitchhike rides on army or private 10 wheelers through flood water. 10 minute boat rides costs 60 baht per person. Around 120baht per way, so around 240baht for a round trip. I have moved to a rented apartment close to my office.

For honest meter-taxi drivers I have a big tip.

Capitalism at it's finest. Good luck to the boat taxi's. For the passengers welcome to democracy.
If I was a boss I would by a cheap boat and employ a driver to ferry my staff to and from work, keeping all sides happy.
