The Ministry of Education will soon distribute the first batch of 600 tablet PCs to selected schools to gauge what impact they will have in the classroom.

Sahaviriya OA Public Company donated the tablets to the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for the government's one-tablet-per-child policy.

"The remaining 100 will be kept in reserve." Held in reserve for what? Spare parts? Damage replacement? Please don't treat the tax paying public like fools. If the purpose is to conduct a pilot project, surely a sample size of 200 is going to be better than 100?

Don't be surprised if the 100 held in reserve never see the inside of a school, but start turning up in the hands to wives and family of the politicians and senior public servants involved.

Before they even give these tablet pcs out, what programs have they written for it to enhance a students learning? How are they going to integrate it to the existing curriculum? I hope these don't end up being used as entertainment devices during play time or recess hours.

More money will needed for programs to be written for curriculum targeted to each grade level. On top of that, many schools don't have wireless connections - this will be need to setup and implemented. I hope the purchases of these equipment won't be from Thaksins companies again as in the TRT days.

Just who will gauge the success of these and what exactly constitutes 'success' (a big grin on the faces of the voting parents)?

One would have thought they might have held off on this news until the flood debacle had died down, after all the promise 5,000 baht relief payment to every household affected is about the same as the cost to distribute these tablets.

The first 6000 will be dished out to much fanfare, pictures of delighted kids in all the Thai papers, but until you've rolled them out on a large scale and committed to software developers, it's impact and usefulness will be very limited.

Headline...First tablet PCs going out to kids soon.... Ok When Exactly?? Such a flaky timescale soon. It's like saying the floods will dissapear soon. Yeah when??

I thought most schools in Bangkok were and will be closed for a few more weeks yet.
