Scholar, Lawyers Council mull suing govt for mishandling floods

The government's potential liability for its alleged mismanagement of the floods, resulting in the severe inundation of the Central Plains, including parts of Bangkok, should be clearer by tomorrow.

A working panel of the Lawyers Council of Thailand, led by Kriangsak Woramongkolchai, will hold talks with Chulalongkorn University economist Narong Phetpraset tomorrow afternoon about the government's liability.

Mr Narong is prepared to sue the government and authorities concerned over their handling of the crisis on behalf of flood victms.

The most they should go is target each individual departments and committees that are responsible. Wrong doers should be sacked not put in "inactive position". Suing will just result in higher taxes, and more debt for the government - just more loss for the country and businesses.

These lawyers might be greedy because its such a big case.

@Disc 34 - Flooding was not the result of the amount of rainfall. It was mainly due to the volume of water released from two dams. It was more of a human error.

I think its impossible to sue a complete government. They may have more luck sueing individuals held responsible. Even if they can get a conviction..so what the individuals have parlimentary immunity and will not go to jail.

The country itself does not have the capability to handle this type rainfall without flooding even with an unobstructed path to the sea. Add an inadequate, insufficient, poorly managed water management system along with countless blockages namely Bangkok and it is a disaster waiting to happen. So you sue the government and give everyone some money and some a lot of money ( guess who ) instead of using the funds to correct this problem so it won't happen again. Look at the real problem here and if you don't fix it then what about next time, more suits.

There was NO flood last year in BKK. AV govt no need to sue.

There IS flood this year in BKK. YS govt should be sue for every last tax payer money.

If they sue the government and win, would that mean the government pays them with the taxpayers' money?

I don't get suing governments. If a government or individual Minister has failed, they should lose their job. Politicians only care about power and the only thing that will make them do their jobs better is the threat of losing that power. Suing a government solves nothing. It just means that the tax payer is punished and the incompetent politician lives to screw up on another day. Make politicians accountable for everything they do!

If these lawyers think this government should be sued because of the floods this year, these lawyers must also agree to sue Mr Abhist and his ministers for last year's floods, which also caused extensive damage and affected a great many people.

"Mr Narong is prepared to sue the government and authorities.."

Education is the single most important factor in developing people to achieve social and economic progress for a country. If academics are more interested in ego-trips, and less in improving their own and their students' knowledge, then we can see the country producing working adults without the capability to compete and develop.

That is why, even though Chula is Thailand's oldest and one of the most prestigious universities, it is ranked a poor 47th in Asia (QS World University Rankings). That is why the UN's Human Development Index ranked Thailand behind countries like Bolivia, Samoa, Turkmenistan, Saint Lucia... (heard of them before?).

"The fish smells from the head".
So when madam PM appoints the justice minister as head of the FROC.
Then she and the justice minister must be held responible for their actions.

With this "no win...no fee" bait from the lawyers, hundreds of thousands of flood victims will be attracted to join this scheme and file a collective lawsuit against the government for a compensation. If the government lost the case, those lawers representing their plaintiffs will certainly get their share of compensation money in terms of billion or even trillion bahts. This is called "champerty and maintenance".
