Surveillance plan grounded

Equipping the airship bought in the US for patrol and surveillance work in the lower South with a pair of state-of-the-art spy cameras will face further delays, the army says.

Hot air: US-built airship is in limbo

Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday said deployment had been complicated by the US reluctance to supply the two high-resolution surveillance cameras for the plane-shaped balloon.

"High-definition security cameras are considered to be warfare equipment and can't be acquired without going through strict procedures," Col Sansern said.

"The US first needs to be confident that the cameras will not be misused or fall into the wrong hands when they arrive.

"Internal coordination between the manufacturer of the airship and the US administration is required before the endorsement for the export of the cameras.

"That should take some time. And I do not know how long it will take."

The army signed a contract for the purchase of the airship with Aria International Inc this year. The deal was announced on April 30.

An army source yesterday said the army would consider terminating the purchase if the cameras could not be delivered.

The purchase contract requires the 350 million baht Aeros 40D airship to come equipped with a surveillance camera for use during the day and an infrared camera for night-time operations.

Col Sansern hoped the delivery of the cameras would not be blocked.

Army staff are being trained on how to control the airship.

The project, initiated by army chief Anupong Paojinda, was originally scheduled for launch last month.

The airship arrived in Thailand without the cameras three months ago."We can actually afford to wait because the construction of the airship hangar in Pattani has just started," Col Sansern said.

The airship is much more cheaper to maintain and operate than helicopter. Airship can stay in the sky much longer and not making loud noises to alert enemy. Thai people know that even in rainning seasons, it won't rain non stop for 24/7 and is not 6 months that long, and it doesn't rain every day, even the rain got to stop. Rain work against both side of the lines, if you know what I mean.

This blimp cannot fly in winds over 30 knots and cannot fly in inclement weather.

6 months of the Thai rainy season this thing is useless. An altitude ceiling of 10,000' max that is not even out of mountaintop rifle range?

    And for $600 million baht?

Pretty expensive toy balloons sitting around

No wonder the economy is in the tank in Thailand will ridiculous purchases like this.

They could have 10 all weather helicopters with even better cameras for less than they paid for these balloons.

People need neither weapon nor High-Def camera to make peace. If have ever Thai authorities willing to make a genuine peace in deep south, this is a time good time to invest in other things. Buying things from loser country like USA won't do anything better. They alomst lost ww2, they lost in vietnam, korea and countless battles in the history. Now Thailand want to follow their steps, better be prepared for worst scenerio. Not to mentioned Thai peoples' tax will flow into USA treasury and then flow again to Japan,China, India and those who borrowed money to USA.

GOODYEAR #6, blimps are slow, big, loud, highly visible, and subjected to bad weather. In short, it's not stealthy and vulnerable to ground fire, esp, from high power sniper rifles. The Predators are, however, the opposite of this stupid blimp.

Yes it is a good piece of kit. No one is denying that. But at the moment it is a Mercedes without wheels. Useless. You have missed the point. We are commenting on how much this type of thing happens in this country. I love it. Gets me out of so much stuff having an analytical mind. If you look at the latest buzz words in education are concerned it is analytical thinking skills. Should I use this as an example for students.

The blimp is an excellent idea, but the Army should have looked into the surveillence cameras before hand! In addition, a blimp does pose a good target and these insurgents have the financial backing to provide the equipment to shoot it down. Using the predator makes much more sense.

Excellent move this is a very good piece of kit I hope the army does get permission from the state department for the Cameras - but similar models are available - this is a very smart move by the Thai Army - at long last someone is actually doing something pro-active. It is a deterrent.

You ppl have no clue what this blimp is capable of. I've seen it first hand here in the war zone in AFG. It's a good investment.

This whole idea has all the same planning problems my school has. Look bright lights and colours. Lets get one. Its beautiful but we did think about how to make it work. No problem. We will just let everyone look at it and everyone will be envious of us. yeah
