'Confessing is sensible — but I didn't do it'

Surachai Danwattananusorn, who has been in jail for nine months facing three charges of lese majeste, says the best way to deal with similar lawsuits is to confess and hope for a royal pardon.
In an interview with the Bangkok Post, the 69-year-old political activist and former communist sympathiser, said those who denied lese majeste charges could end up behind bars for longer than those who pleaded guilty.
"Better follow [fellow lese majeste defendants] Boonyuen Prasertying and Suvicha Thakhor," said Mr Surachai from a small room with a glass wall and iron fence dividing visitors and inmates. "They were in prison for less than two years after seeking a royal pardon.
