As a Dutch citizen I'm very much aware of the importance of a good flood protection as a large part of our country is below sea level. It took Holland decades to complete the masterplan of the flood protection to keep our small country dry and that is why i'm so shocked by the promisse of the Thai government to complete their masterplan covering a huge area within five months. The Dutch government has already offered to share their experience with Thailand but obviously refused because anyone will understand this is not feasible. And even it was feasible to complete the masterplan in such short notice why the government did not take that action already! The Thai government practises casino politics and hope for less rainfall during next rainingseason. I hope i will be able to get to my house in Lam Luk Ka for a holiday next year, something that was not possible this year.

What ever plans they are implicating against the future floods, I hope they will succeed. Then Thai people would live in a more safe place, floods can be cruel and caused a lot of damages. We are still lucky this time, that there was no out break of any kind of serious contagious diseases that we were afraid of.

minaung (#28) - the nature of Thailand's geography is that when there is simply too much water to drain out to sea, it will spill/flood somewhere. That leaves just the choice of where (as best as can be done) to direct the spill. Thailand has vastly more agricultural than industrial capacity & far fewer people in the rural areas. That makes for an obvious choice of which is the lesser necessary evil. Equally obvious is that affected farmers should receive help & full compensation.

    1) Magnificent promises are always to be suspected. (Theodore Parker)
    2) Next year, another type of natural disaster may come.
    3) How about farmlands and people? Only economic zones, major cities, and industrial zones?
    4) Only limited area of farmland would be affected! Naturally not unlimited. Isn't food important?

Good move by the PM. Foreign investors need this boost of confidence. The current government was sworn in just as this disaster was unfolding. With this experience under their belt they are in a good position to develop short and long range prevention plans.

More mega-projects were a worthwhile investment.. a good investment too for those who have big pockets.
