State blamed for row over lese majeste

Accused treated as serious criminals

State agencies fail to understand the lese majeste law clearly as they tend to treat violators as serious criminals, a legal expert says.

Rigorous enforcement of Section 112 of the Criminal Code, otherwise known as the lese majeste law, has led to criticism that it is stifling freedom of speech.

Nakhon Chomphuchat, a lawyer on human rights cases, said state mechanisms were to blame for much of the conflict over the law.
