Credit card services top complaints

Credit card services and low quality consumer products top the list of complaints lodged with the Consumer Protection Foundation this year.

Itthaboon Onwongsa, chief of the foundation's Consumer Rights Protection Centre, yesterday said consumers filed 895 complaints through consumer organisations based in Bangkok and other provinces over the past 12 months.

Most of the complaints were about credit card services. Consumers took issue with high fees and interest rates. They also said some credit card providers tried to pressure card holders into buying insurance policies.

"Many consumers claimed real estate developers lured people to buy their housing units with low deposits and down payments without paying attention to the buyers' ability to service housing loans."

Don't buy a house if you can't even calculate if you will be able to afford it, or if you did not consult a bank with the loan and interest rates before putting down a deposit.

The complaints should be about CC companies not refunding monies due to fraudulent charges, like done in other countries.

Credit card fees are never a problem if you pay your bill in full every month. I have paid some cash advance interest and carryover interest only a couple of times in 30 years. Live within your means.

Ever figure out that real estate developers are only interested in making money. Are people paying deposits and down payments before getting approval for a loan from the bank or mortgage company? If so, they should have a 'subject to loan approval clause', to ensure that they get the deposit back.

Credit card companies are a problem in the US also. If I am late paying any other bill, my credit card interest rate goes up to 30%. Traveler checks are becoming very hard to acquire. Now Visa wants to add 3% on top of any charges I make in another country, including Canada. They move the due date around trying to trap you into late fees and interest, which goes up to 30% because you are late. Visa used to hold onto the bill before sending it to also encourage late fees.
