Survivor calls for residents to play safe

PHUKET : A tsunami survivor has called on coastal communities hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tragedy to make their own contingency plans to prepare for any repeat of the disaster.

Maitree Jongkraijug from Baan Nam Khem, a fishing village in Phangnga province, said the Dec 26 tsunami made him realise the community could not rely on the government alone for its well-being.

He said communities must have their own contingency plans, including shelters managed by residents and local authorities, to respond to disasters without having to go through central administration.
