Charge over Tak disaster prophecy

TAK : A man who spread a disaster prophecy over the internet is facing legal action by the provincial administration organisation chief, who says the prediction has damaged Tak's economy.

Thongbai Khamsi, 73, a Chanthaburi resident, had publicised claims made by his late son 37 years ago that Bhumibol Dam in Tak's Sam Ngao district would burst at 10pm on Dec 31, 2011 _ last night.

Mr Thongbai's son Suthas, or "Pla Bu", was said to be a psychic and made his prediction not long before he died at just seven years old of a brain tumour.

Khun Annan #18, I suppose you're speaking about "the American," Harold Camping, who went against the Bible itself when faultily predicting the coming of the Rapture twice last year. (The Rapture marks the beginning of the End of the World.) Those who know the Bible were well aware that he was making a fool of himself, and yet, nobody sued him, right?

It was also a nice romour advertised on a Thai website that the world would end in June 2011 ... just like the crazy American had predicted. It took some time and good effort to get my friends in Thailand to realize that it was the work of a not very sane old man ;o)

Khun Ozman_BKK #15, unlike any other "religious" books, the Bible is full of prophecies, written over two thousand years ago, which continues to come to pass, one-by-one. It prophesied the rebirth of the state of Israel some 1,900s years after the Jews were scattered all over Europe, as well as, the "Arab's Spring," which is coming to pass right now. So, if anybody wants to know what will happen in the future, just pick up a Bible and read it.

We all know that many in Thailand are superstitious... but "liability"?!?

[Reminds me of the USA lawsuit against McDonald's Restaurants. The person got burned after spilling hot coffee on themselves... oh, by the way, they WON the suit!!!]

There is no doubt that many Thais believe in fortune tellers, black magic and such like. But then again so do many people in other countries. I guess we all have to believe in something. After all Christians believe in what, to some people, may appear to be fortune telling, black magic and such like.

I think this bloke, Songkhram Manassa President of the Tak Provincial Administration Organisation, is taking it a bit far. Are we going to sue anyone who predicts something that doesn't happen. Pollies who predict yearly growth rates of the economy better watch out. And have we seen the last of newspapers predicting stuff. Elections, for example.

May I suggest that Pol Lt Chaiwat Phringsakul file this in the waste paper basket.

With 112 still being enforced, there is no "freedom of speech" in Thailand. And even if there were, your freedom to say whatever you want doesn't give you immunity from legal action if you injure others.

Maybe he got his dates wrong. 3 - 4 months ago a lot of water flowed from the dam which created a lot of flooding downstream!!!!!!!!

#5- IANPRINCE. If Thailand imprisoned every politician that lied, sole money, etc, and every corrupt government official who took bribes, as well as all military and police generals for "unusual wealth", it would be a major boon to the construction industry, as 3-4 Very Large prisons would have to be built to accommodate all of them.

Hold on folks. Mr. Thongbai yesterday made a correction, saying his son didn't specifically predict the dam would burst on the night of the international new year eve. It could happen right before Chinese new year or Thai new year (13 April) or Mayan new year or Jews new year or Byzantinean new year or.....

    Only in Thailand.
