Abhisit won't cut troops

Khmer pullout from temple 'a tactical ploy'

Thailand will not dance to Cambodia's tune by withdrawing troops from the disputed Preah Vihear temple area, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says.

Mr Abhisit said yesterday more pressure would be put on Cambodia next week.

Cambodia's removal of troops from the area was just a tactical ploy, he said. Phnom Penh wanted to give the appearance there were no problems relating to its plans to develop the ancient Hindu temple as a World Heritage site.

"It is their plan and we are not going in that direction," Mr Abhisit said, after a meeting with Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the withdrawal of the 911 special forces unit from its post at the temple. The pullout ceremony was held in Siem Reap yesterday where Hun Sen and fomer Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra met with 60 Puea Thai Party MPs and other Thaksin supporters.

The troop withdrawal came amid increasing tensions between the two neighbours which have escalated since Hun Sen appointed Thaksin as an economic adviser to his government and also his personal adviser. The ensuing diplomatic spat worsened on Thursday when Cambodia expelled a senior Thai envoy, which caused Mr Kasit to cut short his visit to Singapore.

Mr Abhisit said the government was reviewing projects with Cambodia and some of them might be put forward to the cabinet for consideration next week.

He said the government was not distracted by the diplomatic spat with Cambodia and its diplomatic response was in line with proper procedure.

"There is nothing special about this because we have more important things to do," he said.

Mr Abhisit said the government would take appropriate diplomatic measures against Cambodia.

"We will not take action in haste. The steps we are to take must guarantee results," he said.

The government is reviewing a 1.4 billion baht soft loan for a road project linking Surin province to Siem Reap.

He said Cambodia's actions were intentionally provocative.

"Partly this is because they [Hun Sen and Thaksin] need each other," he said.

Mr Abhisit said the Thai-Cambodian rift was not serious enough to close the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.

Mr Abhisit scoffed at Thaksin's remarks that the government was promoting a false sense of patriotism.

"We have not. The sentiment is stirred by Thaksin's actions which are found unacceptable and against the nation's interests," he said.

Thaksin told Puea Thai MPs who visited him in Siem Reap last night the withdrawal of Cambodian troops was down to his friendship with Hun Sen.

Hun Sen told the MPs that he was devastated by Thaksin's fate.

"He is a great asset to Thailand but he has no place to stay. He doesn't even have a passport from his own country," he was quoted as saying.

Hun Sen also said "Cambodia would not interfere in Thailand's internal affairs and the appointment of Thaksin would foster 'unprecedented' relationship between the two countries."

Relations between Thai and Cambodian soldiers deployed in the disputed area seem to have remained undisturbed by the diplomatic flare-up.

Sgt Maj 1st Class Jongrak Taenhom, who is among 10 Thai soldiers deployed near Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri, said there was no tension between Thai and Cambodian soldiers.

"We eat together. We talk. There is no strain or tension. And now they have pulled out, so there is nothing to be tense about," he said.

wantmymoney: you are probably right, I guess. Your writing is a bit cluttered (visually) so i am not quite sure what to extract.

In any case Hun Sen could care less about any economic consequences, he will not have to suffer any consequences.

On the contrary, the finger well get pointed at Thailand and the Cambodians will blame them.

For both Cambodia and Thailand they probably agree to disagree because they have each other as a common adversary to unite the people against. So in fact they are helping each other along in their strategies.

Check Mate! Well Thaksin has left cambodia, played a round of golf with his favourite buddy, gave speeches, met supporters and god knows when he will be back again. Hun Sen withdraw his troops from the border thereby minimising any shooting accident that might injure his people or blamed by thai side for shooting across the border. Neatly packed and sealed waiting for delivery. So no thai loans, MOU somewhere in paper recycling plant and all other thai agreement is getting scrub over possibly put to death. Japan and China is fighting for influence along the mekong river, cambodia has plenty of mega investors waiting in line. The US will probably join the tea party later, resource rich countries like cambodia has nothing to loose but to gain with nasty thai businessman out of the way. So Hun Sen will probably spend his evening watching thai government and abhisit debate on tv what to do with his promise to review all cambodia business agreement. Some nice cold cambodia beer and fish snacks would make Hun Sen a happy couch potatoe.

    "BC" discussion #36:

"Bubba, the army overthrew a government that bought its way into power"

That is the whole point. The army had no right to do so, and their coup was anti-constitutional.

There were legal, democratic channels to go through.

    So I repeat again....

The military set up a government, their government.

THAT government set up the new elections; not Taksin! Get this into your head: The last elections were set up and run by the government working on behalf of the military.

Taksin's parties won. Like it or not. They won in elections, set up and overseen by the military and its government.

And had the parties the military was hoping would win, won? Do you think today anybody would suggest the votes were bought? No, because as long as the parties the military and certain power groups want in, the elections would be considered free and fair.

You cannot hold elections, and when the result doesn't please you overthrow the government. There have been 18 military coups in Thailand in six decades. So, do you think these are the answer? Evidently not, because if military intervention was the answer, then why have governments failed the people for sixty years...???

Yeah Paul the rest of the world is worried about serious problems like the fake war on terror, fake climate change, fake swine flu, and fake economies built on fake wealth. Yes the Thais are so childish to instead spend their time defending their sovereignty and eliminating a traitor from their midst.

It would make a good comic opera - and as long as it remains a comic opera, that's fine!

    Bring back Gilbert & Sullivan!

Red Shirters are like 5 year olds. If you asked a five year old what they wanted for dinner every night, they'd say chocolate icecream. That's why 5 year olds don't make those sort of decisions.

Icecream might taste great, but it rots your teeth and if you eat it everyday you're going to die from diabetes and heart disease, not before you suffer morbid obesity. Same with Thaksin. He may pay well for support, dump public funds into the laps of the laziest in society, but that is unsustainable and in the long run EVERYONE will suffer - everyone is suffering because of his stupidity and the missed opportunity during the economic boom to actually INVEST Thailand's wealth in education and infrastructure that would have truly lifted the rural poor out of their situation.

Bubba, the army overthrew a government that bought its way into power, and was consolidating and abusing its power beyond its democratic and constitutional mandate. Beyond that... they were corrupt as all get out! Thaksin's land deal is just one of MANY crooked deals he is accused of, and simply the first he has been convicted and sentenced for. Remember Temasak? Remember the murderous drug war? Remember Tak Bai?

He's got to answer for all of this.

Just because he's able to buy support doesn't excuse him from his crimes and abuse of power.

Enough now. Elections aren't going to work until you have an educated public and qualified candidates. Thailand has neither.

What do you suggest Bubba aka Jarob lol ?
We have an election right now Chavalit becomes our PM excuses Thaksin and we start all over again .You seem to be slanted actually towards Thaksin that is .Democratic elections dont really work if we end up with a fugitive excused and put back in power again .Until we have a realistic alternative and the charges against Thaksin have been put through court I think Thailand is doing just fine .Your the one who seems hell bent on democracy no matter what .Maybe you could explain where you think Thailand will end up under your grand know all plan .I believe Thailand is on the right track already .
