Red-shirt journalist slain in Phuket

A journalist who was a local red-shirt leader in Phuket was shot dead in his car on Thursday, police said.

Wisut Tangwitthayaporn, 44, was the owner and editor of local newspaper "Inside Phuket" and a core member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship.

Pol Col Chote Chidchai, the Muang Phuket police chief, said Mr Wisut was driving his Honda car, with his wife  Jiraporn Hosakul sitting by his side, when he  was attacked by two men on a motorcycle at the entrance of Sri Suchart housing estate, opposite a Nissan showroom in tambon Ratsada in Muang district.

I don't think red shirts would kill a prominent red shirt leader.

Dispite Khun Wisut being a red shirt leader,I deplore acts of violence, especially against members of the press. It is also sad that one-track-minded red shirt supporters in this forum immediately yell political motivation before anything is revealed about the case. Guys, there are in fact plenty of crimes which have nothing to do with politics. Try reading the article in The Phuket News. I believe the local reports are very likely causes for the hit on Khun Wisit. He would not be the first journalist slain for these reasons.

I hardly think his being a red shirt has anything to do with this. Note that he was the owner of the newspaper. I'd suspect he wrote something about a local godfather, or else this was just another business dispute. Settling disputes with hitmen is far too common here, and Phuket has plenty of gangs. Life is very cheap in the Land of Smiles.

According to local reports, the dispute was probably linked to land encroachment issues revealed by Khun Wisut in the newspaper.

D1 What is also sad is the usual chorus of commenters supporting the military crackdown and referring to the red shirts/UDD as violent groups tend to remain quiet when UDD and or PTP people are murdered.

The flow of information is the greatest threat to the military domination of the country who need to keep the population sleepwalking and instilled with one-way information only to hang onto power. the last thing they want is people communicating about the real world.

Journalists and photographers are always somehow ending up dead in conflict areas where the state confronts the people.

Thailand is going to the boondocks! But that is not something new, is it?

Its very sad that people target the press in this way.I do hope that this is not political, as a certain party now has a repitation of such things. Maybe its an article that has been written, that caused this murder?

This is a very sad day when a member of the press is killed, no matter what his political affiliation. There is no way this can be anything but politically motivated. The people that had this done DID hire professionals.
