U-turn by key witnesses in TRT trial

Two key witnesses in a 2006 trial of the Thai Rak Thai Party have said they were bribed to press false charges against former TRT executive Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhya, resulting in the dissolution of the party.

Suksant Chaiyathep and Chavakarn Tosawat, of the dissolved and little-known Pattana Chart Thai Party, told a press conference yesterday they were paid by Deputy Prime Minister and Democrat secretary general Suthep Thaugsuban to frame Gen Thammarak.

"We were paid 1 million baht each to set up Gen Thammarak and give [false] statements to the Election Commission.

"Mr Suthep promised to pay us 15 million baht each, help clear the charges [against us], field us in the elections and give us political positions if the Democrat Party won," said Mr Suksant.

Mr Suksant said he decided to expose the plot three years later because Mr Suthep did not keep his word, especially when he was about to be prosecuted on charges of electoral fraud.

Mr Suksant and Mr Chavakarn alleged at the time that Gen Thammarak paid them to have election officials tamper with the poll commission's database to enable candidates of the smaller party to "compete" with TRT candidates in the April 2, 2006 election.

The allegations were deemed strong following the release of still photos which were captured by surveillance cameras in front of Gen Thammarak's office at the Defence Ministry. Gen Thammarak walked past a group of visitors from Pattana Chart Thai.

Mr Suksant said he felt sorry for the TRT, its executives and ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who were banned from politics for five years.

He added that he had evidence about the alleged pay-off.

"I have financial records about the money transfers. I will disclose them later and I can assure you they are linked to the Democrat Party," he said.

Mr Chavakarn said yesterday that he was asked to do it for the country and he faced charges for that.

The press conference was organised at a Bangkok hotel by Puea Thai members led by Gen Panlop Pinmanee.

A source in Puea Thai said yesterday the party consulted Thaksin about the press conference and he gave it the go-ahead.

Meanwhile, Democrat MP Chinnaworn Boonyakiat yesterday cast doubt on the timing of the allegation.

He said it was likely a part of the ousted prime minister's ploy to undermine the government which was now pitted against Phnom Penh over Thaksin's extradition.

These people should not be able to bargain their way out of trouble. Their self confessed criminal acts have caused immense problems. Their testimony is worthless as they admit to having lied before why should anyone believe them now?
Certainly their claims need to be investigated this can be done with or without their cooperation. Money leaves a trail, follow it. If they don't cooperate prosecute them further for obstructing justice.
Get these people and stop this sort of disgusting traiterous type of behaviour, these are the people who would happily ruin Thailand to fatten their bank accounts.

From what I have heard these two are facing some serious jail time by coming forward. That of course could be bargained away for their evidence and testimony.

I agree with MMouse, Discussion 5: These two people must be prosecuted. Either for their part in taking bribes, or - if they didn't - in making false allegations.

Do not grant them a suspended jail terms, like most convicted criminal politicians receive, because they deserve a real punishment.

Such people are far bigger and more dangerous criminals than those small street criminals, sentenced to many years in jail.

As these 2 people have freely admitted having done numerous illegal activities for money I hope they will be prosecuted and punished for their money grabbing actions.
This is the only way to stop such behaviour which continues to do serious damage to society and the country.
After dealing with these 2 which is easy as they have provided a public confession their claims should be investigated and others involved should also be punished.

Oh this is really good for credibility of Thailand and its entire governance! How is the international community going to trust you if they see you bribing and turning on each other?
You are so naive. You act like little school children with their hand caught in the cookie jar! Only this is worse! You are adults!

Oh plueeze. You only have to read the bottom few lines of this story to see what BS this is. Three years after an incident the group alleges they were “bribed” to frame the TRT. They now “feel sorry” for TRT and Thaksin. They have “evidence” but won’t release it (how many times have we heard that before. “I can prove it, but later". As long as I get my name in the papers today, I don’t have to provide any basis for my allegations) The press conference was hastily organized by PT rabble rouser Panlop Pinmanee. Thaksin was “consulted” by PT before the press conference and gave “the go-ahead”.

It’s no wonder that Thai politics is in such a shambles when you have people so gullible that they actually take things like this seriously. As this was a “press conference” I would be interested in seeing a transcript of the questions members of the press, including the BP’s Wassana Nanuam, actually asked Mr. Suksant, including if they have evidence of the facts they are alleging, why are they not prepared to show that evidence at the time of the press conference? Absent that, this is nothing more than a dog-and-pony-show by Thaksin and PT as a follow-on to his Cambodia circus.

    This is pathetic.

So maybe TRT wasn't lying after all. Figures that these democrats can only win office by cheats and lies. They even cheated the people that helped them cheat hahaha. That wasn't very smart. I'm sure there are more cases like this were people were bribed to hurt Thaksin's case. It's only a matter of time before it's revealed.

Hmmmmm... Something always seemed strange in the TRT trial to me. Maybe there is more than a bit of smoke here or maybe they got their money from someone else.
