Terror suspect planned Bangkok attack, says website

Hezbollah planned Mumbai-style attack on Chabad Bangkok, Khao San restaurants

A detained Lebanese Hezbollah terrorist suspect was part of a planned attack on the Chabad Jewish community centre near Khao San road in Bangkok, according to a news website which specialises in intelligence reporting.

Debkafile said on Tuesday that its sources confirmed that Hussein Atris, who was arrested by Thai police at Suvarnabhumi airport on Friday night, was part of a planned attack along the lines of al Qaeda's attack on the Mumbai Chabad [Jewish] centre in 2008, involving the taking of hostages and blowing up the building. Eight Jews were killed in the attack.

The Debkafile website also has pages in Hebrew.

According to the sources quoted on the English language page, the planned attack would have been even deadlier because Chabad Bangkok is larger.

The sources also said that two or three ''Hizballah'' (sic)  groups were to launch coordinated attacks simultaneously this month, and one of them was to strike at restaurants that are popular with Americans and Israelis on Khao San road.

Does this person have a history of exporting goods and of exporting these particular products? Does he have a legitimate history (or any history) of business with these products in other countries. Someone would not just decide to export or deal with such a large amount of these products without either knowledge of the market and/or business history. Why not require a license when dealing with over a certain amount of ammonium nitrate? Terrorists are well schooled in making explosive substances from everyday materials and well versed at how to deny responsibility to evade prosecution. Its not a national problem, its a global problem where everyone is either for it or against it.

Yes, the chemicals will be used for making sleeping pills, the kind that make you sleep forever. I also have a nice bridge to sell you for 50 Baths.

The suspect actually claimed that the chemicals found were to be shipped abroad for strictly medical use.

I thought y'day the Thai authorities said they had a guarantee from the detainee that BKK was not being targeted and the bomb making materials were for export.

This now seems to be contradicted by the latest independent report which says KSR was the intended target.

I find it hard to believe the bomb making material would be taken across a border with the risk of being detected.

This looks like the large quantity of fertiliser was to be used in a massive truck bomb or similar in BKK.

"The tip-off originated with Lebanese nationals living in Bangkok who had been approached for assistance. Those informants, who did not trust the local authorities to act, went straight to Western and Israeli contacts,..."

Many thanks to those Lebanese people for not trusting the local authorities to act and going to those who take such things serious and know what to do with this kind of information.

6 years ago the police where I live issued an arrest warrant for the Thai maid who was supposed to take care of my mother. They haven't found her yet. Local authorities.... I'd better not comment further.

"On the arrest of Mr Atris, Debka sources said, "Thai police were waiting for the suspect at the airport after receiving alerts from US and Israeli counter-terrorist agencies, which had advance information about the coming attack.

"The tip-off originated with Lebanese nationals living in Bangkok who had been approached for assistance. Those informants, who did not trust the local authorities to act, went straight to Western and Israeli contacts, who then published terror alerts to US and Israeli travellers."

So the Thai polices are behind the curve and canot be trusted, what a sad state of affair.

I'm sort of confused by this quote from Itexpat: "As all suspect this is an Israeli/US job to further distract the world except it is not working." Well, personally Itexpat, I suspect that you are a crazy person.

Anyway, the above article mentions Debkafile, so I went and check the article, and it says that the tip off came from other Lebanese living in Bangkok who were approached for assistance, who then went straight to the Israelis and Americans. If this is true, big thanks to the Bangkok Lebanese. You may have saved hundreds of lives.

D3 .hello ,whats Chalerm got to do with it. The Isralies have been proved right. Tough to swallow for you but there it is.

In 1994 the Thai police had no idea about the bomb plot. They pushed the bomb laden tanker to the side of the road in Soi Lang Suan and left it from 3 days until motorists complained about it blocking the road.

The police are so decentralized here they do not know what each police box is doing let alone sharing intelligence.

What is subtle manner? Common!! get real! You have to be careful labelling any one terrorist. This any one is the man who led the polices to the place where bomb materials kept. If he is not terrorist what he should be called? undercover for Hezbollah ?or good samaritan who care so much for human life especially live of Thai people? He targeted only Americans and Israelis. Have you ever heard word "casualties" Bkk could have been the second OklaomaCity. Do not kid yourself. People live are at stake. You do not build fences after cattles escape. You do it before. Can't use "better late than never" mentallity .
