Governor on notice about floods threat

Yongyuth warns BMA to cooperate in prevention

Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit yesterday threatened to remove Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra if he fails to cooperate with the government in dealing with the potential flood threat this year.

Speaking before chairing a meeting on water management in Bangkok, Mr Yongyuth said he was authorised to take actions including dismissing the city governor.

"I can do it by law but that would be the last resort," Mr Yongyuth said. "Flooding requires a concerted effort. Bangkok must understand we have to work things out together."

Bula, discussion 18; the Bangkok Governor should be awarded and decorated for being the only intelligent and sense full opposition to this mismanaging PT/UDD red thug government> Give us an new election in BKK and he will be the overwhelming winner!!!

Even a primary school student knows its the incompetence of this PT/UDD red thug government that gave us too much flooding!!

Khun Abbub #34, so, don't you think it is rather appropriate for the BKK Governor to refuse to sacrifice his city on behalf of the YS's Administration, which caused the MANMADE calamity in the first place? Judging from the end results alone, which administration do you think was a competent one, the one which caused it, or the one that dodged it?

JOKE D6: "And who gets to arbitrarily dismiss the govt...?"

The military of course. They already have 20 interventions in less than 8 decades under their belt. One would think if after eight decades they have still not SOLVED the problems maybe the problems have soothing to do with the military!

GEOFFO I do not think the government took the lead last year but rather followed lamely what the Bangkok governor and others wanted. In a sense in my eyes the PTP is looking more like a lame duck government all the time.

SPICEMAN yes, the governor blatantly refused to do what the government said and forced his "save bangkok at all costs" on everybody. He even stated openly he would do so "for the one million people that voted for me".

Khun Android #28, King Rama the V, laid out the foundation of BKK, according to its geography, which called for digging of several canals (Khong) in the eastern part of BKK, as natural floodways to handle floodwater from the north. BKK, itself is like a bucket, and if flooded, the only way to get rid of the water is by pumping it out only. Therefore, the best defense is to seal off BKK and channeling the floodwater to the eastern part though many canals, into the Gulf of Thailand. However, the best plan of all is to manage the dams properly, so none of the MANMADE calamity would befall Thailand at all. Hope this helps!

    @12
You're right, some areas above Bangkok are still flooded and this government hasn't done much at all. There have been protests in some areas, but you won't read about it since this information can be even more damning to the governments continued failure to rectify these problems.

I'm curious if anything has been done to those illegally built houses and golf courses where khlongs used to be to the east. There were promises from this government they would take care of this, but nothing at all as far as I know, has been done.

People still in water, people still waiting for their paltry 5,000baht, people still waiting on empty promises.

What's a funny logic? If I screwed up again, I will fire you! Only in Thailand, I guess.

The BMA governor needs to cooperate like anybody else does, give him a slap over the fingers maybe that is enough to get him moving ... he probably thinks that he is untouchable but he isn't The Klongs were not clean...are they clean now probably not...flod gates not working then...do they work now ? Probably not.....drains full of crap and sand then ...clean now ,,,probably not... so lot's of little things to ...get on with it ;-)

Khun Med #23, let, get something straight here, shall we? Last late September, was the first time that the water level at Bhumibol Dam breached the "safe zone,"in more than 40 years since the dam had been in operation, and we all witnessed what followed. We also knew why, since the AG Minister finally came clean with it.

BKK is geographically like a bucket, and if flood water is allowed to breach its defense, and flood its interior, the only way to get rid of it is by pumping it out. So, it was a correct strategy to seal off BKK and let the floodwater drain itself down to the East, which was originally designed as a natural flood channel hundreds of years ago.

Finally, do floodwater and gravity care whether the screwing-up Govt is duly elected or not? And by looking at last year flooding MANMADE catastrophe, obviously, they don't care, OK?

  • Discussion 28 : 27/01/2012 at 01:27 PM28

Even a primary school student knows that flood water must pass through Bangkok before discharging into the Gulf of Thailand finally. In future if the BMA still refuses to open all water sluice gates at outskirts of Bangkok to ease the flooding, the government really needs to exercise this "firing power" to dismiss the Bangkok governor without hessitation.
