Kittiratt knows speeding up flood projects takes priority

Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong has no time to lose in implementing the government's flood prevention policy, Post Today argues.

Irrigation workers battling last year’s floods create a floodway near Liap Khlong Rangsit Road, to handle northern runoff before it was diverted to the eastern side of Bangkok. The government is putting the hurry-up on flood prevention projects worth billions of baht, as it knows the health of the economy—and its own future in office—hang on its attempts to avoid a repeat of last year’s disaster.

On his first day at work at the Finance Ministry on Monday, Mr Kittiratt asked the ministry heads to pour all available funds into building and repairing infrastructure to make sure there is no repetition of last year's floods.

The country is on notice and needs to act (wisely) now to do everything possible to prevent a repeat of last year's flood crisis and to send a signal to industry that continued investment in Thailand will be profitable. Otherwise industrialists will continue to relocate eleswhere and jobs will continue to be lost and not replaced.
