Ranger killed, policeman wounded in far South

A paramilitary ranger was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pattani and a police sergeant major seriously wounded by two gunmen in Narathiwat on Wednesday.

The policeman was attacked by two gunmen in Cho Airong district of Narathiwat province this afternoon. Pol Lt Kittikhun Pattamanusorn of Cho Airong police station said Pol Sr Sgt-Maj Veerachai Yudam, 40, was attacked while returning home on his motorcycle on the Yaning-Cho Airong road in tambon Chuap by two men on another motorcycle about 1.40pm. The two men, each armed with a pistol, opened fire at him. One of the shots hit him in the left ribcage and another in the thigh, wounding him seriously. Pol Sr Sgt-Maj Veerachai returned fire with his 11mm pistol and his attackers fled. He was admitted to Cho Airong hospital. In Pattani's Khok Pho district, a paramilitary ranger was killed in a drive-by shooting this morning.
