Police to act against extortion gangs

The Metropolitan Police Bureau on Tuesday announced a four-step plan to combat the extortion of motorcycle taxi operators by criminal gangs in Bangkok.

The move came after Chalerm Changthongmadan, chairman of the Hired Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Association (AMTD), and 300 members operating in Bangkok and surrounding areas approached Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung last week seeking protection from extortion and assault by gangsters.

If so, there won't be any cops in the streets soon.

How wonderful they "manage" things. Where are all the nay sayers for previous government? Any one? No again??? Sound of dead silence....as usual

Yes, drsmith, discussion 1, is right - we all know. Remarkable that the comment is allowed; previously many similar comments were "filtered out". Is that a sign of more freedom of expression? Maybe, but many critical comments on man in other coloured uniforms are still suppressed.

Oh look pigs are flying. Why is it that everyone knows who is involved in the extortion rackets, even the everday thai does.
Nothing will come of this. Maybe some innocent people will be made scape goats.
Its not often that you will find here that everyone will be in agreement.

I can't muster much sympathy for motorcycle taxi drivers.
They're a bunch of thugs looking for trouble.

Asking the police to police themselves is the same as asking the fox to guard the henhouse.
