Medical council demands changes to law

The Medical Council of Thailand plans to push for an amendment to the Consumer Case Procedure Act 2008 in a bid to help protect doctors from lawsuits.

"We disagree with details of the law, which consider doctors and hospitals as businesses," said council chairman Amnat Kusalanan during a seminar on the impact of the law on medical ethics and professionalism.

"Most hospitals are state-owned, so [discussions about their work] should be based on medical ethics, not consumer law."

    The government runs many businesses for profit. To think just because many of the hospitals are owned by the government that they are automatically not for profit is wrong. Everything the government runs is geared to making a profit. Most don't accomplish this because of bad management, and alleged corruption, but all are run with the intent of making a profit for the taxpayer.
