PM: Govt to focus on flood prevention

The government will this year focus on flood prevention and will implement measures to ensure that there will be no recurrence of last year’s great flood, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Saturday morning.

In her “Yingluck government meets people” talk show, Ms Yingluck said the devastating flood took place last year because the amount of runoff water was as much as 20 billion cubic metres and there was no water management plan at that time.

The government will follow His Majesty the King’s initiative on water management. The water management plan is divided into water management in upstream, middle stream and downstream areas, said the prime minister.

Somehow i don`t think we will have to wait the 20 years for the trees to grow before we can see if it was worth the 400 Billion OR NOT ?

Don't they realise how long it takes for a tree to establish itself, their roots will definitely not have grown enough to prevent any mudslides in time for this years's monsoon season and would probably take several years to be effective. I'm not saying don't do it, we all know it needs to be done, but it's too late for ths year.

How's about getting rid of the same disastrous AG Minister first, to make sure he is nowhere near the dams to begin with? Otherwise, we would never know what would be his next "bright" idea of "helping the farmers" this year!

'plans' like this regularily pop up since 30 years -- but usually just remain 'plans' ...

Have they started demolishing the illegally built luxury houses and golf courses built on major klongs on the eastside yet? While trees are important, it will do no help year. Start with the problems that can be taken care of first.

Will this work? Trees planted, they will not prevent a flood, but they will and maybe prevent mud slides.
But it has to be the right kind of trees with deep roots.

Plant the trees all over Thailand .There are none . Johnny Appleseed could have a field day here .It cools the temperature on the ground ,conserves soil ,and provides shade and if all else fails you can cut them all down again .
