B7.5m for South victims mulled

Cabinet will be asked in two weeks to consider paying a 7.5 million baht compensation package to the families of victims of violence in the South, Justice Minister Pracha Promnok said on Sunday.

Pol Gen Pracha revealed the move after chairing a meeting of the committee on the impact of insurgency-related incidents in the southern border provinces.

He said the meeting resolved to seek compensation for the families of those killed in major security incidents including the Krue Se mosque massacre in Pattani in April, 2004; the mass suffocation of detainees following a protest in Tak Bai district of Narathiwat in September, 2004; the Al-Furqan mosque shooting in Narathiwat; as well as those killed or had disappeared through actions by state authorities.
