Minister issues water warning

Typhoons, storms set to test infrastructure

Thailand could be inundated by up to 20 billion cubic metres of water this year but Bangkok will not be flooded, Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi says.

The country may be hit by 27 typhoons and four tropical storms in the coming months and sea levels will be higher than last year by 15cm.

The assessment was based on data collected by the science and technology, information and communication technology and agriculture ministries.

'Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi says.'

The same man who ran out of a meeting in a blind panic. A public disgrace and yet he is still a minister. Huh ? Why is he listened to even and why did he not resign ?

I'll bet all the Peua Thai supporters on here a thousand baht each that next year the government makes a hash of the floods.

"sea levels will be higher than last year by 15cm" where is the proof of this? If the sea levels rise this high many countries will be flooded and coastal cities such as Bangkok inundated! "but Bangkok will not be flooded" how did this person get to be a scientist!

Let's hope and pray they don't screw it up again this year. When Japan, the world's third largest economy, can point the finger at floods in Thailand as a major contributing factor to it's economic downturn, you can bet they won't let it happen again... "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."

With this simple water management plan that is guaranteed to work , then why is there a need for such huge sums of money for flood mitigation? The only amount I see needed is to pay the people who suffered from the last flood, then to clean out the already in place canal system, and that is only a few hundred million baht, not billions.

Whether FROC is around of some new agency if flooding occurs again, it is the duty of all Thais that love the country to cooperate with the authority to minimize the loss of life and property.

I always get a bit in doubt when I see all these large numbers, but concerning the sea level rise of 15 cm....nope that is not going to happen in one year..!!! I think it is one these cases where translation of a number from a foreign language to Thai and then back again has gone wrong ....;-)

Ahh ok so please enlighten me, as i thought all typhoons start as a storm? But these are educated people and experts in this field so i must be wrong.

Bangkok will not be floodid, does that mean the people have to suffer again outside of bangkok? Mother nature will never be beaten or tamed,It can only be controlled to a certain amount.
I think that these people need to understand how powerfull water is. It takes about 6(12cms) to 12(24cms) inches of fast flowing water to make someone loose there footing.
All the debris that it will carry also.

"Thailand maybe hit by 27 typhoons and 4 tropical storms in the coming months. But don't worry the recent discharges will now ensure that the dams will able to retain the majority of this water". Here's hoping that these storms dump there water on the dam catchments and not below the dam walls. The Department Science & Technology. Is that the same department that told us boat propellers will increase river flows?
My neighbour tells me that we will have an exceptionally wet wet season this year, because the tamarind have fruited early and are abundant. Guess that's where the data is coming from.
